BIMINI, Bahamas – Despite a career-high 25 points from senior
Jazmyn Doster, the University of Alabama at Birmingham's hot shooting from beyond the arc was too much to overcome for the Patriots.
The senior forward posted career-highs of free throws made (11-15) to contribute to her point total, also grabbing a game-high eight rebounds and recording a steal. For the fifth time this season, she was one of three players to record double-digit point totals.
The two teams were just about even through the first 10 minutes as the Blazers (4-0) led 16-15. Mason converted six baskets to UAB's five, but four made free throws provided the difference.
The Patriots (3-5) were unable to minimize the Blazers' shooting in the beginning of the second quarter, as they went on a 9-0 run to open up a 10-point lead. The teams traded points though the final five minutes until a three-pointer by junior
Taylor Jameson allowed the Patriots to pull with seven, 35-28, at the half time break.
Mason scored six straight points to open the second half with new found energy to force a UAB timeout with 8:18 remaining in the third, but it allowed the Blazers to reset and went on a 15-7 run to lead by nine again. The teams traded points throughout the rest of the quarter and went into the break with UAB leading 60-50.
The Blazers hit four three-point shots from four different players in the fourth quarter to hold off a strong Patriots' push. Mason outscored UAB 24-23 in the fourth, led by 11 points off of free throws, but the Blazers' 78% shooting was too much to overcome.
