FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team will wrap up its' three-game homestand on Monday night when it welcomes former CAA foe William & Mary to EagleBank Arena.
Monday's game will be the 75th all-time meeting between the Patriots and the Tribe, matching up every year between 1977 and 2013, before meeting up again in 2020 and 2021. The two teams are often equally matched, and neither team has won by more than 15 points since 2006 when the Patriots won 70-51 at home.
Last year's meeting ended in overtime with the two teams tied at 49 at the end of regulation. The Tribe dominated in the extra period, outscoring the Patriots 16-5 to provide the final score, 65-54.
The Patriots are rolling into Monday's matchup, having won their last two games, both in EagleBank, by a combined margin of 48 points. Mason dominated Charleston Southern and battled a tough Loyola Maryland team to earn their first wins of the season.
The Tribe is coming into Monday's matchup off of their first loss of the season to Old Dominion, 59-43. The Tribe also received votes on Nov. 15 in the most recent Women's Mid-Major Top-25.
PATRIOT POINTS
- Offensively, Mason is led by junior Taylor Jameson, who set a new season-high of 19 points on Saturday and is now averaging 13.8 points/game. She is also contributing defensively and leads the teams with nine steals.
- Seniors Nalani Kaysia (10 PTS) and Tamia Lawhorne (17 PTS) also posted double-digit performances, making them the fourth and fifth players to score at least 10 points in a game this season.
- Kaysia also leads the Patriots under the net, averaging 7.6 rebounds/game. She is joined by graduate student J-Naya Ephraim as the only two Patriots to register double-digit rebounds in a game.
- As a team, Mason has progressively been shooting better, upping their field goal %, three-point % and free throw % over the last three games.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
Preseason All-CAA First Team selections and Sydney Wagner (13.7 ppg) and Riley Casey (17.0 ppg) are leading the Tribe, averaging double-digit scoring through the first three games. Bre Bellamy is William & Mary's top rebounder, averaging 7.7 boards per contest while adding a third best 8.0 points per game.
Alexa Mikeska has posted a team-high eight assists this season to go along with seven steals and 5.0 ppg. As a team however, the Tribe has only tallied three total blocks, a category in which Mason is excelling this season.
