Patriots Settle For Draw Against UNCW

FAIRFAX, Va. – Freshman midfielder Zach Golden scored his first goal in a Mason uniform to account for the Patriots' lone goal in a 1-1 draw against UNC Wilmington in a midweek, non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon at George Mason Stadium.
 
Mason (2-9-2, 1-4-1 A-10) and UNCW (5-3-5, 3-1-2 CAA) played a scoreless first half, with each team recording one shot on goal.
 
Mason took the lead early in the second half.
 
In the 50th minute, Golden took a pass from sophomore defender Joshua Morrobel and struck the ball from 18 yards out into the upper right corner of the net to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.
 
Morrobel registered his first collegiate assist on the play.
 
The Seahawks pressured late and put four shots on goal over the last seven minutes of play.
 
In the 88th minute, UNCW senior forward Jalen Anderson netted the equalizer from just inside the box with a shot that went off the post and into the lower left corner for the 1-1 draw.
 
Mason senior goalkeeper Jake Langley (2-9-2, 1-4-1 A-10) made four saves, while UNCW senior goalkeeper (4-3-5, 3-1-2 CAA) made three saves in the match.

The draw is just the third in 32 meetings between the two teams, with all three ties at George Mason Stadium.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

The Seahawks recorded 15 of their shots in the second half and outshot the Patriots in the match, 18-8.  The Patriots finished with a 4-3 edge in shots on goal.  UNCW finished with nine corner kicks and Mason had four corner kicks in the match.
 
Senior defender Jonathan Fawole, sophomore defenders Valentin Brandis, Ahmed Mohamed and Morrobel, freshman midfielder Nicholas Prioli, freshman defender Will Carson and Golden each played 90 minutes.
 
Junior forward Ishmail Kamara, freshman defender Christian Xantus, Brandis and Golden each put one shot on frame in the match.

The Patriots play their final road match of the season on Saturday when they take on VCU with the opening kick scheduled for 7 p.m. at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Va.
