Game Recap: Women's Soccer |
KINGSTON, R.I. – The George Mason University women's soccer team fell to Rhode Island in Sunday afternoon's game 1-0. In their last home game of the season, the Rams won their second home game and now have three wins overall.

HOW THEY SCORED
RHODE ISLAND

48' | Tierra Garniss (5), assisted by Tess O'Connell

The Patriots had two close moments to score in the game. The first opportunity came in the 15th minute, when a free kick by Milan Pierre-Jerome was sent into the box that met the head of senior defender Kolbrun Eyjolfsdottir. Eyjolfsdottir's header from eight yards out was aimed right under the middle part of the crossbar, but Rhode Island's goalkeeper Faith Hutchins jumped and punched the ball out of the goalframe at the last moment. The second opportunity came at the dying moments of the game, when freshman forward Sophie Davidson ran down a ball lobbed by Abby Najdzinowicz. Davidson outran her defender and tapped the ball just out of the reach of the rushing Rhode Island goalkeeper who came all the way out past the 18-yard box. However, the touch was too heavy for the Patriot forward to recover, as the ball rolled out of bounds just two yards left of the goalpost.

Rhode Island scored early in the second half. Deep in the Patriots' defensive territory, the ball was cleared right to Tess O'Connell, who then passed it to Tierra Garniss for a left-footed one-timer from over 20 yards out. The ball arced over the box and landed right under the right side of the cross bar and just over the outstretched arms of the diving Selamawit Caldart.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Selamawit Caldart recorded four saves versus Faith Hutchins' three
  • The Rams outshot the Patriots 14 to three. All three shot attempts for the Patriots were on goal, while only five of Rhode Island's were shot on goal
  • Mason had one corner kick compared to Rhode Island's two. All three corner kicks were given in the first half
  • Mason committed only eight fouls while Rhode Island committed 10
