FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's and women's swimming and diving teams will face Atlantic 10 opponents for the first time this season, competing against Davidson, Duquesne and Richmond at the Richmond Duals on Friday and Saturday.

The events will take place at the Robins Center Natatorium and SwimRVA in Richmond, Va.
Â
Swimming events will be held at SwimRVA beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday and 10:15 a.m. on Saturday. Diving events will be held in the Robins Center Natatorium beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Friday and 9:15 a.m. on Saturday.

The Mason women's team will face Duquesne on Friday and then take on either Davidson or Richmond on Saturday.
Â
On the men's side, Mason and Davidson will compete in a single dual meet over both days.
Â
Last season at the Richmond Duals, the Patriots' women's team defeated East Carolina, 166-105, on Friday and fell to Richmond, 159-125, on Saturday. The Mason men's team dropped it's two-day dual against Davidson, 216-194.Â

The women's team won nine events against the Pirates on day one, with
Abigail Murtaugh and
Ali Tyler each posting two individual first-place finishes.

Murtaugh took the top spot in both the 100-yard butterfly (58.45) and 200-yard butterfly.Â

The Patriots went one-two in the 50-yard freestyle, with Tyler touching the wall first (23.87) and
Emma DeJong second (24.76). Tyler also won the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.19), with
Megan Mastropaolo second in the event (2:11.53).

DeJong won the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.81).

Mason took the top three spots in the 100-yard freestyle, with
Jacquee Clabeaux first (51.90), DeJong second (52.79) and
Shannon Judge third (54.09). The Patriots also took all three spots on the podium in the 100-yard backstroke, with
Anka Whelan first (58.57), Judge second (1:00.08) and
Calli McEvoy third (1:01.11).

Kat Diatchenko placed second in the 1650-yard freestyle (18:29.12) and Whelan took second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.50).

In the 200-yard medley relay, the group of Clabeaux, Whelan, Tyler and Murtaugh took the top spot (1:46.84), while the combination of
Emily Lewantowicz,
Daphne Bernal, Judge and McEvoy placed second (1:51.46).

Emma McDonald finished second in the one-meter diving event (172.60).

On day two, the Patriots won seven events against the Spiders.
Â
Tyler had another big day, taking the top spot in both the 100-yard freestyle (51.88) and 100-yard backstroke (56.64).

Clabeaux won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.28) and placed third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.31).Â

Murtaugh swam to a first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.41) and was third in the 100-yard butterfly (58.71).

Whelan won the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.95), placed second in the 400-yard IM (4:32.25) and was third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.26).

Mason swept both relay events, with DeJong, Judge, Clabeaux, and Tyler touching the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:35.70) and DeJong, Clabeaux, Murtaugh and Tyler first in the 400-yard medley relay (3:51.98).

In the diving event, McDonald was second in both the one-meter (151.25) and three-meter (172.60).

On the men's side, the Patriots won six events over the two-day dual against the Wildcats.
Â
Jared Bergan won the 200-yard butterfly (1:53.00) and
Thomas Chapman claimed the 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.76).

The Patriots took the top three spots in the 200-yard IM, with
Anthony Nguyen winning the event (1:55.16),
Sammy Lucht second (1:55.49) and Chapman third (1:56.47).

Nguyen was second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.99), with
Walter Turlington third (1:46.10).
Â
Alexander Franklin finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (21.38) and
Graham Boyle placed third in the 1650-yard freestyle (17:03.28).

The Patriots took three of the top four spots in the 100-yard freestyle, with Franklin second (47.29), Roberts third (48.09) and
Will Rastatter fourth (48.14).

Mason won the 200-yard medley relay, with the team of
Sorab Aman,
Zane Roberts, Franklin and Lucht (1:33.36). Nguyen, Champman, Rastatter and Roberts took second in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:08.34).

Kevin Dinkel placed first in the one-meter event (176.95) and
Ian Castegnaro placed third in the one-meter diving event (196.10).

The Mason men's team has 20 returners and 12 newcomers on the roster under head coach
Peter Ward, who begins his 24th year with the program.

THE PATRIOTS SCHEDULE

The Patriots opened the campaign against American, Georgetown, Howard and Mount St. Mary's at the Potomac Relay Invitational (Sept. 23), hosted by American University at the Reeves Aquatic Center in Washington, D.C., with both the men's and women's team finishing first.Â
The women's team won five events and finished with 554 points to take the top spot, while the men's team won four events and finished with 532 points for the first-place finish.Â
Â
Mason swept its lone home dual meet of the season against Towson on Oct. 8 at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The women's team won 10 of 16 events to defeat the Tigers, 145-133, while the men's team won nine of 16 events to post a 159-139 victory.
Â
The Patriots will then face conference opponents on back-to-back weeks.
Â
Mason will compete at the Richmond Duals (Oct. 20-21) held at SwimRVA in Richmond, Va. The Patriots will then travel to participate in the annual A-10 Classic (Oct. 29-30) at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

Mason returns to Fairfax for the final home meet of the season, hosting the annual Patriot Invitational (Nov. 17-19) at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.

The Patriots will compete at the U.S. Open (Nov. 30-Dec. 3) in Greensboro, N.C.
Â
The 2023 portion of the schedule includes road duals at UMBC (Jan. 21) in Baltimore, Md. and at Old Dominion (Jan. 28) in Norfolk, Va.

The Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships will be held Feb. 15-18 at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

The NCAA Zone A Diving Qualifier will be hosted by Navy (March 6-8) in Annapolis, Md.

The NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships will be held at Tennessee (March 15-18), while the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships will be hosted by Minnesota (March 22-25).
