Patriots Drop Road Match to No. 19 Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio – The George Mason men's soccer team dropped its Atlantic 10 road match to No. 19 Dayton, 4-0, on Saturday night at Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio.

Dayton entered the game tied for the fifth-highest scoring team in the nation with 25 goals, only behind Charlotte (31), Wake Forest (27), Cal St. Fullerton (27) and Washington (27).

With the match scoreless late in the first half, Mason (2-7-0, 1-2-0 A-10) fell behind Dayton (8-0-1, 2-0-1 A-10) in the 45th minute of play. 

Dayton took the lead with just eight seconds left and on the final shot of the half.  Senior forward Manny Day converted with a header for his team-leading fifth goal of the season from eight yards out into the lower left corner of the net to put the Flyers in front, 1-0.

The Flyers took command with three goals in the second half, including a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes of play.

Dayton scored with the first shot of the second half in the 47th minute.  Junior forward Samuel Owusu tallied his first goal of the season on a rebound from 10 yards out into the lower right corner to increase the lead to 2-0.

In the 56th minute, senior defender Jaden Jones-Riley scored his first goal of the campaign into the upper right corner from 30 yards out to make it a 3-0 game.

Dayton added to the total late in the match when senior defender Xavier Zengue scored his second goal of the season from just inside the 18 into the center of the net in the 79th minute for the 4-0 final score.

Mason senior goalkeeper Jake Langley (2-7-0, 1-2-0 A-10) made five saves, while Dayton junior goalkeeper Dario Caetano made two saves in the match to record his fifth shutout of the season.

HOW THEY SCORED

45' | Day scored with a header for his fifth goal of the season from eight yards out into the lower left corner.
47' | Owusu scored on a rebound for his first goal of the season.
56' | Jones-Riley tallied his first goal of the season from 30 yards out into the upper right corner.
79' | Zengue scored his second goal of the season from 18 yards out into the center of the net.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

The Flyers outshot the Patriots, 15-6, including a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal.  Dayton finished with five corner kicks, while Mason had one corner kick in the match.

Senior defender Jonathan Fawole, junior midfielder Louis Lehr, sophomore forward Balint Kocso and freshman defender Will Carson each played 90 minutes in the match.

Graduate student forward Noah Raphael and Lehr each recorded a shot on goal for the Patriots.

The Patriots were shutout for the third straight match and for the fourth time this season.

NEXT FOR MASON

The Patriots open a two-game homestand when they host La Salle on Wednesday, Oct. 5, with the opening kick scheduled for 7 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
