Mason Hosts A-10 Preseason Favorite St. Bonaventure Wednesday

FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason University men's basketball team (9-7, 2-1) wraps up a three-game homestand Wednesday vs. preseason A-10 favorite St. Bonaventure (11-4, 3-1).

Tip-off between the Patriots and Bonnies is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday's contest will be broadcast on ESPN+. Bill Rohland will handle play-by-play duties. In addition, Steve Kolbe will call the game on the GoMason Digital Network, with pre-game coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m.

PATRIOT POINTS
• Mason has won the first two games of the homestand, including triumphs over Dayton Saturday (50-49) and Saint Joseph's Monday (77-71). SJU made 13 triples and shot 50 percent from deep on Monday, but Mason forced 17 Hawk turnovers and held a +32 (56-24) edge in points in the paint for the game.

• Junior Josh Oduro exploded for an A-10 personal-best 31 points in Monday's win (12-22 FG). It marked his second 30+ point effort of the season and seventh game with at least 20 points.

• Graduate student D'Shawn Schwartz added 14 points (6-12), including a critical 3-pointer with under two minutes to go. He's scored at least 14 points in the past six games and ranks third in the A-10 in scoring (19.3 ppg) in league contests.

• Mason received outstanding point guard play Monday. Xavier Johnson dished out five assists (0 turnovers), while Ronald Polite III notched a season-best nine points (4-6 FG) and also committed 0 turnovers.

• Mason's four total turnovers Monday marked the lowest by a Patriot team since a Jan. 29, 2011 win at William & Mary.

• The Patriots rank 21st nationally in 2pt FG% (.557), 30th in effective FG% (.545) and 88th in 3pt FG% (.354) this season.

• Junior Davonte Gaines just missed another double-double Monday against the Hawks, tallying nine points and nine rebounds. His five double-doubles rank second in the A-10 and 59th in the nation this season.

• The Patriots rank 47th nationally and third in the A-10 with 9.2 3pt FG made/game. That's a school record by a sizable margin (7.3/game, 1987-88).

• Mason is shooting 48.5 percent from the floor through three A-10 games. The Patriots are also averaging just 9.7 turnovers in league play, down from 12.6/game during non-conference play.

HISTORY vs. ST. BONAVENTURE
Wednesday's matchup marks the 15th all-time meeting between Mason and SBU. The Bonnies hold an 11-3 advantage in the series, including a 10-1 mark since Mason joined the A-10 in 2013-14. SBU has won four of the six meetings in Fairfax. Last season, the Bonnies picked up an 84-67 win on Jan. 30, 2021 inside the Reilly Center.

A LOOK AT THE BONNIES (11-4, 3-1 A-10; KenPom 80, NET 94)
St. Bonaventure was picked to win the A-10 in the league's preseason poll. The Bonnies tallied an 8-3 non-conference mark, highlighted by a Charleston Classic title which included wins over Boise State, Clemson and Marquette. SBU is 3-1 to begin A-10 play, which includes a 73-53 home win over VCU on Jan. 14. The Bonnies feature a top-50 scoring offense (49th, 1.107 points/possession) and turn it over on just 16.2 percent of possessions (34th nationally).  Defensively, led by Osun Osunniyi, the Bonnies rank fifth nationally in block rate. Osunniyi is eighth in the country in blocks per game (3.33), 20th in offensive rebounds/game (3.47) and notches 10.9 points/game. Jaren Holmes leads the team in scoring (15.3 ppg) and dishes out 3.9 assists per contest. Jalen Adaway adds 14.6 points and 7.3 rebounds/contest while Kyle Lofton chips in 13.8 points/game and dishes out a team-best 5.5 assists/contest.   

UP NEXT
Mason hits the road for a Sunday contest at Massachusetts. The 2:30 p.m. contest in Amherst will be televised nationally on USA Network. It's the first of two games against the Minutemen this season.
