KINGSTON, R.I. – A late fourth quarter run propelled Rhode Island past the George Mason women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon inside the Ryan Center in Kingston, R.I.
Mason (6-8, 0-2 A-10) pulled within five with seven minutes remaining before Rhode Island (12-3, 2-0 A-10) went on a 9-0 run to put the game out of reach. The Rams pulled away to earn the 59-49 victory.
Sophomore Taylor Jameson led the Patriots with a team-high 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Senior Amaya Scott added 12 points and seven rebounds while sophomore Angelee Rodriguez scored a career-high 10 points (5-8 FG) in her first career start as a Patriot.
Despite a strong defensive effort, Mason struggled offensively, shooting just 36.2 percent from the floor (21-58) and 23.5 percent from three-point range (4-17). The Patriots were held to season lows in points (49) and free throw percentage (.333).
After Rhode Island jumped out to a 13-3 lead, Mason held the Rams scoreless for the final 6:24 of the first quarter (13-10). The Patriots forced five turnovers in the opening frame.
Mason then went on an 11-0 run in the second quarter to take its first lead of the game (21-18). The run was highlighted by seven straight points from Jameson. The Rams scored six straight points to take a three-point lead at the break (26-23).
Through the first 20 minutes, Mason forced seven turnovers and held the Rams to 32.1 percent shooting from the field (9-28 FG).
The two teams traded baskets in the third period. Jameson nailed a three-pointer with time expiring as Mason trailed by five with one quarter remaining (42-37).
After Mason cut the deficit to five thanks to a Rodriguez layup, Rhode Island rattled off nine straight points to pull away with the victory, 59-49.
