WILSON, N.C – The George Mason men's volleyball team won their season-opening match against Barton College in three sets (25-19, 25-13, 25-19) on Friday inside Wilson Gymnasium.
In a game that was back-and-forth for a majority of match, the Green & Gold were able to string along some impressive scoring runs during the end of each of the three sets to ensure their victory.
"Getting the first win out of the way is a nice way to start the season," said head coach
Jay Hosack. "But we are a long way from where we want to be. I thought we did some nice things tonight, but there is always room for improvement. We are looking forward to playing another quality team tomorrow night and see if we can improve on some things."
The Patriots held the advantage every set, but the Bulldogs rallies were not enough to take the lead. The Green & Gold held strong defensively, allowing the Bulldogs to a hit at a clip of -0.072.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Redshirt sophomore Jack Bolz tallied a match best 10 kills and 14 points.
- Sophomore Omar Hoyos recorded four of Mason's 11 aces in the match. The outside hitter also added a match-high five digs.
- Redshirt junior Zach Talamoa set a team high and match best of 21 assists.
- Mason hit at a clip of .211. Talamoa (1.00), redshirt sophomore Eamonn Testerman (.438) and Bolz (.438) all shined offensively for the Patriots.
- On the defensive end, Hoyos recorded a match-high four blocks.
- Freshman Lucas Little made their Mason debut on Friday.
