FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's volleyball team dropped its Atlantic 10 opener to Duquesne on Friday night at the Recreation Athletic Complex.
Mason (2-10, 0-1 A-10) struggled offensively in the final two frames as Duquesne (6-6, 1-0 A-10) pulled away with the four-set victory. The Patriots will look to bounce back on Saturday evening when they face Dayton at 5 p.m. at the RAC.
The Patriots posted 12 blocks and 10 services aces, but hit just .197 in the match. Senior
Peyton Ehmke finished with a team-high 12 kills (.206) while freshman
Ewelina Gacek added 10 kills (.222) and a personal-best five service aces.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- With Mason in front 19-16 in the first set, Duquesne went on an 8-0 run (24-19). The Patriots responded with four straight points; but it was too late as the Dukes held on, 25-23.
- The Patriots dominated the second set, hitting a set-high .407 with 14 kills and just three attacking errors on 27 attempts. Mason won the frame, 25-15.
- Mason hit -0.038 and .132 in the third and fourth sets, respectively, committing 14 total attacking errors. The Dukes tallied 28 total kills in the final two sets (.278) to earn the 3-1 victory.
- Gacek recorded a career-high five service aces against Duquesne. She has registered a service ace in 10-of-12 matches this season.
- Stephanie Der (12) and Marlanna Bozicevich (11) steadied Mason's back row, each finishing with double-digit digs.
- Senior Katie Parmalee matched her season high in blocks with six while freshman BrookeLynn Sapp posted a personal-best five blocks in the match.
