PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – George Mason freshman forward
Balint Kocso scored his first collegiate goal, but the Patriots dropped their Atlantic 10 opener to Saint Joseph's, 3-1, on Friday at Sweeney Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
Mason (1-4-1, 0-1-0 A-10) took the lead over the Hawks (2-5-0, 1-0-0 A-10) midway through the first half.
In the 20th minute of play, Mason freshman
Linus Dahl set up the goal when he played the ball into the box, with Kocso converting with a header from six yards out to put the Patriots in front.
Saint Joseph's scored the first of its three goals early in the second half.
Graduate student defender Tevin Lessey scored the equalizer with a header in the 47th minute. Graduate student midfielder Aidan Watkins set up the tally with a service into the box.
The Hawks took the lead six minutes later, with junior midfielder Chris Hunt netting the eventual gamewinner with a header off of a corner kick by Watkins to make it a 2-1 game.
The Patriots pulled their goalkeeper late in the match looking for the equalizer. After a deflected free kick in the final minute of play, Saint Joseph's graduate student midfielder Omry Perel scored into an empty net on a breakaway for the 3-1 final.
Mason sophomore goalkeeper
Jackson Lee (1-4-1, 1.71) made two saves, while Saint Joseph's sophomore goalkeeper Luis Ludosan (1-2-0, 1.67) made three saves to record his first victory of the season.
