NEWARK, Del. - The George Mason women's soccer team (0-1) fell to Delaware (1-0) by a score of 2-1 on Thursday night inside Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
The Patriots' offense did not get off to the start they were looking for in 2021, recording just five shots (three on goal) on the night. Delaware recorded 14 shots, seven of which were on goal.
Offensively, seniors
Sara Chontosh and
Shannon Lee, as well as sophomore
Katie Saunders notched a shot on goal. Senior
Dacheka Kolcum tallied two shots on the offensive end for the Green & Gold. Lee scored in the 74
th minute on a penalty kick.
On the defensive end, senior goalkeeper
Louisa Moser recorded five saves in 90 minutes played. Fellow seniors
Kolbrún Eyjólfsdóttir,
Shannon Lee, and
Keri Yoon each played full time (90 minutes) for the Patriots as well.
Mason allowed 6 corner kicks to the Blue Hens. Delaware spent a significant time on attack, helping to secure their win at home.
"This game was a good test and a lesson learned for us," Head Coach
Manya Puppione said. "I am proud of how we fought back and got ourselves back in the game, but we know we can do better individually and collectively, right from the start. Credit to Delaware for putting us under pressure. We will come together to continue to build on what we have been working on. We are excited for our home opener against a tough opponent versus Maryland on Sunday."
