Patriots Power Past La Salle on Saturday

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason softball team (17-17, 9-15 A-10) took two from La Salle (0-29, 0-20 A-10) in Saturday's doubleheader inside the George Mason Softball Complex.
 
The Patriots defeated the Explorers 3-2 in game one and finished the day with a 6-1 victory in game two.
 
Sophomore Rachel Warrens earned her third home run of the season, while freshman Sydney Bales tallied an RBI in each game. Bales now has four RBI in her last five games and is on a five-game hitting streak.
 
Sophomore Maddy Myers is also on a five-game hitting streak, going 9-for-15 in those five contests with two doubles and four RBI.
 
GAME ONE: Mason 3, La Salle 2
The Patriots went up a run in the second inning when Bales singled through the middle of the infield, scoring senior Meghan Graham.
 
In the next half inning, La Salle would tie the game at one with a ground ball.
 
The Patriots would once again take the lead with an RBI single from junior Amber Verstynen, scoring Myers.
 
The Explorers persisted with a run in the fifth to bring the game to 2-2 in the fifth inning.
 
Sophomore Allison Torstensen would give the Patriots the run they needed in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly to left field.
 
Freshman Carly Cooper (2-2) would earn the win for Mason in the circle while grad student Bekah Ansbro earned her fourth save of the season.
 
GAME TWO: Mason 6, La Salle 1
The final game on Saturday was closer than the score indicated.
 
The Explorers jumped out to an early one-run in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly. Later, Mason would answer with a Bales' RBI single in the fourth inning, tying the score at one.
 
In the sixth, the Patriots' offense would explode for five runs on five hits. The rout would start with an RBI single down the right field line from Torstensen.
 
Later with two runners on, sophomore Haley Taormina doubled down the left field line plating two.
 
To cap off the monster sixth inning, Warrens launced a two-run homer, hitting the foul pole. The round-tripper was Warrens' third of the season which is good for second on the squad.

Ansbro would earn the win for Mason, improving her record to 7-7 on the year.

UP NEXT
The Patriots conclude the season with a single game tomorrow against La Salle. First pitch is scheduled for noon ET and the game will be streamed via ESPN+.
 
The contest will be Mason's Senior Day where the team will be celebrating its 2021 graduating class.
