Women's Soccer 5/11/2021 10:00:00 AM
The George Mason University women's soccer team could not finish their 2021 campaign the way they had hoped, as the team canceled its final match of the season due to safety concerns relating to COVID-19.

The Green & Gold began Atlantic 10 play 2-1-1, defeating both George Washington and VCU while playing to a 1-1 draw versus Richmond.

The Patriots would later beat Richmond by a score of 2-1, closing the season with an impressive victory. The last time Mason defeated in-state rivals VCU and Richmond and A-10 rival George Washington in the same season was in 2017.

Juniors Dacheka Kolcum and Sara Chontosh and senior Kayla Hamric led the Green & Gold's attack with two goals apiece in the 2021 season.

Kolcum had an impressive outing against George Washington, tallying a goal, an assist and four shots on goal on March 14. Kolcum's score came in overtime, a golden goal to beat the Colonials.

Her effort in the victory earned her the A-10 Player of the Week honor, Kolcum's first of her career.

Chontosh netted the Patriots' first goal of 2021 against Davidson on March 7.

Chontosh's second goal of the season proved to be the deciding goal in the Patriots' victory over the Spiders on April 8. The cross from freshman Lina Dirnberger gave way to an impressive header from Chontosh.

Hamric's two scores came in the same week, in back-to-back games. The forward/midfielder had one of the most impressive goals of the season, with a fantastic assist from sophomore Grace Hotaling.

The senior was also honored on Mason's Senior Day on April 4.

Junior Naja Ashman scored her first collegiate goal on March 21. Her first score was the game-winning goal to beat rival VCU.

Freshman Katie Saunders also recorded one of her three assists on the goal to beat the Rams. Saunders' three assists led the Patriots in 2021.

Saunders also tallied her first collegiate goal in a win over George Washington.

Goalkeeper Louisa Moser started all 10 matches for the Patriots, including a season-high seven saves in the season-opening match against Georgetown.

Moser also led the Patriots' defense in an impressive outing against the then-10th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers on Feb. 28.
