Late-Inning Rally Not Enough for Patriots, Drop Both Games in Doubleheader

Game Recap: Softball |
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The George Mason softball team (14-14, 9-13) dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader against George Washington.

The Patriots fell by a score of 4-3 in the first game and lost 2-0 in the back-end of the doubleheader.

Mason is now 9-13 in Atlantic 10 play and will look to improve that record in tomorrow's doubleheader.

Junior EJ Bankson went 3-for-6 with a double and a run scored on Saturday. Senior Meghan Graham went 2-for-6 with an RBI and a double while freshman Sydney Bales finished 2-for-5 with two RBI in the doubleheader.

GAME ONE: GW 4, Mason 3
A couple sacrifice flies and a triple in the bottom of the fourth gave the Colonials a 3-0 lead all the way until the seventh inning.

In the seventh inning, with their backs against the wall, the Patriot bats came alive. Bankson began the seventh with a lead-off single, then senior Marissa Butts earned a single of her own.

With two runners on, senior Meghan Graham mashed an RBI double to left center to bring the Patriots within two runs.

Later on in the seventh, Bales came through in the clutch with a two-out, two-run single to left field to tie the game at three runs apiece.

The three-run seventh forced the Colonials to bat in the bottom of the seventh, where George Washington would win in walk-off fashion.

Senior Haellie Gordon got the decision for the Green & Gold. Her record is now 7-5 on the year.

GAME TWO: GW 2, Mason 0
The Patriots' offense could not take the momentum into game two, as Mason recorded just three hits.

Mason's pitching staff in Gordon and Bekah Ansbro combined for seven strong innings in game two, as the Colonials recorded just four hits in the contest.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Colonials broke the 0-0 tie with a two-run home run to take a late two-run advantage. That would be the only run support George Washington needed, as they defeated the Green & Gold in the final game on Saturday.

Ansbro got the decision for Mason. The right-hander's record is now 6-7 on the season.

UP NEXT
The Patriots continue their four-game series with the Colonials tomorrow. First pitch to begin the doubleheader is set for noon ET. Both games will streamed via ESPN+.
