FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team is back in action after a weekend with no games, facing VCU for a four-game series Friday, April 30 through Sunday, May 2 at The Diamond in Richmond, Va.
Last time out, Mason (9-18, 2-6 A-10) dropped the final game of its series against Dayton, 14-3, on April 18 at Woerner Field in Dayton, Ohio. The Flyers won three-of-four in the series.
Mason is 50-56 all-time against VCU. Since joining the Atlantic 10 in 2014, the Patriots are 5-6 in 11 regular-season games against the Rams.
The Patriots are 3-3 in their last six games at The Diamond. VCU took two-of-three games April 20-22, 2018. The Patriots won the first game of the series, 11-3, with the Rams winning the final two contests, 6-4 and 1-0 in 12 innings.
During the 2015 season, the Patriots won two-of three games on the road against the Rams. Mason earned a 7-1 victory in the first game and took the rubber game, 7-6, while VCU won the middle game of the series, 9-1.
Sophomore infielder/outfielder
South Trimble is batting .366 (26-for-71) with four doubles, one triple, one home run, 12 RBI and 14 runs scored in 19 games. He is fifth in the A-10 in average (.366). Trimble is second on the club in hits (26), tied for third in doubles (4), and fourth in RBI (12).
Senior catcher/outfielder
Bailey Klein has a .315 average (23-for-73) with six doubles, one triple, 13 RBI and six runs scored in 21 games. He is tied for second on the club in runs scored (15) and is tied for fourth on the team in hits (23).
Senior designated hitter/first baseman
Scott Morgan is hitting .312 (29-for-93) with four home runs, seven doubles, two triples, 21 RBI and 15 runs scored in 26 games. He leads the club in hits (29), home runs (4), doubles (7), RBI (21), and total bases (52).
Freshman center fielder
Jordan Smith is batting .268 (22-for-82) with four doubles, three triples, 15 RBI and 15 runs scored. He leads the club in stolen bases (5), is tied for second on the team in both RBI (15) and runs scored (15), and ranks fifth in hits (18).
On the mound, junior
Jared Lyons (4-1, 3.69, 49.2 IP) and graduate student
Ryan Stoudemire (1-7, 7.50, 30.0 IP) share the team lead with eight starts each. Among A-10 leaders, Lyons ranks tied for third in wins (4), is fourth in strikeouts (58) and seventh in innings pitched (49.2).

Kieran Versaw-Barnes (1-4, 6.21, 33.1 IP) is second on the club with six starts. He leads the team in complete games (2), and ranks second in innings pitched (33.1) and strikeouts (28). Junior

SCOUTING VCU
VCU has an overall record of 23-13, including a mark of 5-3 in A-10 play. The Rams are 13-3 at home and 10-11 on the road.
The Rams lead the A-10 in hits (245), RBI (237), runs scored (271), and total bases (549). VCU is second in the league in doubles (67) and walks (177), and third in home runs (41) and slugging percentage (.439).
Last time out, the Rams scored 11 unanswered runs and defeated VMI, 15-5, on Tuesday in a midweek, non-conference game at The Diamond. VCU has won a season-high seven games.

Senior infielder Steven Carpenter has a .319 average (38-for-119) with eight doubles, two home runs, 24 RBI and 17 runs scored. He ranks 13th in the league in hits (38).
On the mound, freshman Mason Delane (0-0, 4.03, 44.2 IP) leads the team in starts (12) and innings pitched (44.2). Freshman Tyler Davis (7-1, 4.84, 35.1 IP) leads the Rams in wins and is second in both innings pitched (35.1) and saves (3).
