FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team will face George Washington in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Siegel Center in Richmond, Va.
 
Wednesday's game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN+.
 
PATRIOT POINTS
* The 14th-seeded Patriots will take on #11 George Washington in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship on Wednesday. 
 
* The Patriots are the No. 14 seed in the tournament after finishing conference play with a mark of 0-14. The Colonials earned the No. 11 seed with a mark of 5-9 in A-10 play. 
 
* Wednesday's matchup marks the third meeting between the two teams this season. GW recently handed Mason a 68-39 loss in the A-10 regular season finale on Feb. 28 in Washington, D.C.
 
* Mason will be playing in the Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championships for the eighth time. The Patriots are 3-7 all-time, having reached the quarterfinals on two occasions. With a win on Wednesday, Mason would advance to the second round and face #6 Richmond at 8 p.m. on Thursday.
 
* Graduate student Daijah Jefferson is averaging 10.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.0 blocks over the last seven games she's appeared in (Jan. 26-Feb. 20). She is shooting 79.2 percent from the free throw line, sinking 19-of-24 attempts. She did not play in Mason's regular season finale vs. GW due to an injury.
 
* Freshman Taylor Jameson has made at least one field goal in 20 straight games for the Patriots. Over the last three games, she is averaging 8.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals while shooting 38.5 percent from the floor and 40.0 percent from deep.
 
* Sophomore Jazmyn Doster scored 10 points (3-6 FG) in Mason's loss to GW on Feb. 28. It marked her first double-digit scoring performance since Dec. 16, 2020 vs. William & Mary. 
 
* Junior Livija Kaktaite has started the last four games for the Patriots and is averaging 4.3 rebounds per contest in 20.5 minutes played over that stretch.
 
* Over the last two games, freshman Vanessa Laumbach is averaging 6.0 points and 3.5 rebounds while shooting 62.5 percent from the floor. She tied her season high in points (7) at George Washington.
 
* Redshirt freshman Rachel Balzer has started the last nine games for the Patriots, scoring in double figures on four occasions during that stretch. She leads the team in three-point field goals made (32) and ranks 11th in Atlantic 10 play in three-pointers made with 25.  
 
* Balzer has registered 3-or-more three-point field goals in seven games in 2020-21, with six of them coming in conference play. She recorded back-to-back games with four treys against St. Bonaventure (Feb. 12) and Duquesne (Feb. 14). 
 
* The Patriots are second in the conference in offensive rebounds per game (13.5) and third in total rebounds per game (40.0). The Patriots have a league-best 840 total rebounds.
 
* Nine different Patriots have led the team in scoring this season - Korpinen (6), Jefferson (6), Balzer (3), Popovic (2), Wilson, Wakefield, Doster, Stam and Jameson.
 
SERIES HISTORY
George Washington has won three straight to lead the all-time series, 27-13. Wednesday's matchup marks the third meeting between the two teams this season. GW claimed a 67-47 win on Jan. 17 in Fairfax, and recently defeated the Patriots 68-39 on Feb. 28 in Washington, D.C.
 
Wednesday marks the third meeting between the two teams in the Atlantic 10 Championship, dating back to when the Patriots joined the league in 2013-14. GW has won both championship meetings: #1 George Washington 78, #9 Mason 48 on March 4, 2016; #5 George Washington 69, #4 Mason 59 on March 2, 2018.
 
SCOUTING GW
George Washington has won four of its last five games to sit at 5-9 in the Atlantic 10 and 8-12 overall. The Colonials ended A-10 play on a four-game winning streak but fell to Fordham, 48-43, in a non-conference matchup on March 4 in D.C.
 
George Washington is led by freshman Ali Brigham who is averaging 12.0 points per game. She is shooting 50.7 percent from the floor – good for fifth in the conference. Preseason All-Conference Third Team selection Neila Luma adds 8.2 ppg and 6.3 rpg.
 
Graduate student Jasmine Whitney leads the league in steals per game (2.9) and ranks second in the A-10 in assists per game (4.8).

A-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship begins March 10, with first round games. The VCU Rams will host the championship event, Wednesday through Sunday, March 10-14.
