Villalobos Belts Second Home Run in a Pair of Patriot Losses

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason softball team (8-2, 4-2) fell in both games to A-10 rival George Washington (10-6, 2-0) in Saturday's doubleheader.
 
The Colonials won the first contest by a score 11-0 (five innings) and finished the doubleheader with a 10-1 victory.
 
The two losses on Saturday mark the Green & Gold's first loss of the season. It is also Mason's first loss since March 11, 2020.
 
GAME ONE: GW 11, Mason 0
The Colonials jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back.
 
George Washington would go on to score eight more runs on nine hits and shutout the Patriots.
 
Junior EJ Bankson and sophomore Haley Taormina were the only two Patriots to record a hit in game one. Taormina also earned a walk in the loss.
 
GAME TWO: GW 10, Mason 1
Sophomore Annie Villalobos crushed a home run over the left field wall to give the Patriots an early 1-0 lead. The solo shot is Villalobos' second home run in four days after launching one against Morgan State on Wednesday.
 
The Mason lead would last until the fourth inning, then the Colonials' offense exploded for seven runs on five hits. The avalanche of runs gave George Washington a 7-1 lead.
 
The Colonials would add three more runs in the final three innings to earn a nine-run victory.
 
UP NEXT
Mason will continue their four-game series against George Washington with a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. The games will be streamed via ESPN+.
