Patriots at VCU for Saturday Afternoon Showdown

LAST MEETING:  The Patriots fell to the Rams, 4-3, in a penalty kick shootout in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship on Nov. 9, 2019.
 
FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's soccer team is back on the road to face VCU on Saturday, March 20, with the opening kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m. at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Va.
 
Last time out, Mason (0-3-2, 0-0-2 A-10) hosted George Washington in the first Atlantic 10 home match of the season on Wednesday, March 17.  The Patriots and Colonials played to 0-0 double-overtime draw.
 
The Patriots recorded the only shot on goal in the first half of play.  Each team finished with three shots on goal in the game.
 
Mason freshman Ishmail Kamara, sophomore forward Kent Harrison and freshman midfielder Christopher Schray each put a shot on frame in the match.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Jackson Lee made three saves to record his first career shutout.
 
Harrison leads the team in goals (2) and points (4) and is second on the club in shots on goal (5).  Kamara is second on the team in goals (1) and leads the Patriots in shots (13) and shots on goal (6).  Lee (0-3-2, 1.77) has made 19 saves and allowed 10 goals in five games played.
 
The Patriots are 10-15-10 in 35 all-time meetings against VCU.
 
The two teams last met in the 2019 Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Va.
 
Mason scored in the 17th and 33rd minute and took a 2-0 lead into the break.  VCU scored twice in the second half, in the 68th minute and in the 90th minute on a penalty kick to send the game to overtime.  The Rams defeated the Patriots, 4-3, in a penalty kick shootout.
 
The Rams outshot the Patriots, 22-8, including a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal in the match.
 
Mason and VCU will meet again in the final game of the spring 2021 regular season on Saturday, April 10, with the opening kickoff slated for 2 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
 
SCOUTING VCU
 
VCU has an overall record of 2-1-0, including a mark of 1-0-0 in Atlantic 10 play.  The Rams are 0-1-0 at home and 2-0-1 on the road.
 
Last time out, VCU blanked Davidson, 1-0, on March 13 in Davidson, N.C.  Freshman midfielder Tariq Moutaouakil scored the lone goal of the match in the 89th minute, while senior goalkeeper Mario Sequeira made a season-high three saves.
 
VCU defeated Elon, 3-2, on March 7 at Rudd Field in Elon, N.C.  Sophomore midfielder Celio Pompeu recorded his first career hat trick, including the game-winner in the 83rd minute, to lift the Rams to the win.
 
Pompeu leads the club in goals (3), points (6), shots (11) and shots on goal (6).  Moutaouakil is second on the team in goals (1), points (2) and shots on goal (3).
 
Sequeira (1-1-1, 0.31) has made seven saves and allowed one goal in three games played.  Sophomore goalkeeper John Ermini (1-0-1, 2.00) made four saves and allowed two goals in his one game this season.
 
CORNER KICK
 
VCU leads the all-time series, 15-10-10.  The Patriots have faced the Rams 35 times, sixth-most of any opponent in program history, behind William & Mary (47), Albany (46), George Washington (45), James Madison (41) and Old Dominion (38).
 
The 10 draws against the Rams are the most that the Patriots have had against any opponent.
