Mason Remains Unbeaten After Sweeping Morgan State

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason softball team (8-0, 4-0) remains perfect on the season, sweeping Morgan State on Wednesday afternoon.

The Patriots won the first game by a score of 6-0 and finished the doubleheader with an 8-0 victory in five innings.

The Patriots improve to 8-0 on the season, the program's best start since 1987.

"Our staff is proud of how everyone has been able to stay ready when called upon," head coach Justin Walker said. "It is exciting to see how every member of our squad celebrates each other's success. The pitching staff did a great job of keeping the hitters off balance throughout the day and the offense was fantastic with runners in scoring position."

GAME ONE: Mason 6, Morgan State 0
The Patriots got out to a quick start on Wednesday, scoring five runs on three hits in the first inning. Junior Taylor Dadig drove in two runs with a single through the middle of the infield.

Later, sophomore Haley Taormina recorded a two-run RBI triple to give Mason a four-run lead. Fellow junior Amber Verstynen finished off the first inning with an RBI, driving in Taormina.

Sophomore Rachel Warrens doubled into left field, scoring senior Haellie Gordon in the bottom of the second. The RBI double extended the Patriots' lead to six.

The Green & Gold would hold the six-run advantage for their seventh victory of the season.

Right-hander Haellie Gordon secured her fourth win of the season, improving her overall record to 4-0. Gordon now leads the Patriots in wins (4).

Gordon's ERA currently sits at a dominating 0.29. The senior has allowed just one earned run on 14 hits in 24.0 innings pitched.

GAME TWO: Mason 8, Morgan State 0 (F/5)
It took the Patriot offense a couple of innings to get going at the plate, but Warrens helped to jumpstart the Mason bats as she earned a two-run RBI single to score senior Meghan Graham and Verstynen.

Graham later singled through the four hole of the infield which would score Verstynen and freshman Carly Cooper in the bottom of the fifth. Later in the inning, Warrens would once again come through for the Patriots and drive in Graham with a single up the middle.

Sophomore Annie Villalobos would come in to pinch hit for the Green & Gold and she delivered a walk-off three-run home run to give the Patriots an 8-0 victory in five innings.

Freshman Carly Cooper made her first collegiate start for Mason, recording a complete-game shutout allowing just two hits and two walks in 5.0 innings of work, including three strikeouts.

Mason hosts George Washington this weekend (March 20-21) for a four-game #RevRivalry series. All games will be played inside the George Mason Softball Complex.
