Mason Sweeps the Bonnies on Sunday

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason softball team (6-0, 4-0) swept St. Bonaventure for the second afternoon in a row, defeating the Bonnies twice on Sunday.

The Patriots defeated St. Bonaventure by a score of 5-0 in the front-end of the doubleheader and beat the Bonnies in the second contest by a score of 4-1.

The two victories mark Mason's third and fourth conference victory of the season and the fourth-straight win against St. Bonaventure. The Patriots are now on a six-game winning streak and is the last remaining unbeaten team in the Atlantic 10.

GAME ONE
Sophomore Allison Torstensen singled through the left side of the infield to leadoff the bottom of the second inning. Torstensen would come around to score later in the inning on an error from the Bonnies.

Torstensen's score would give Mason an early one-run lead.

Later in the inning, sophomore Haley Taormina earned a two-run RBI single to left center, scoring freshman Marlaina Bozek and junior Taylor Dadig. The hit gave Mason a three-run advantage.

Senior Meghan Graham would end the four-run second inning with an RBI, scoring Taormina.

Mason took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth, when senior Amber Verstynen laid down a successful bunt to lead off the inning. Verstynen would later steal second, get up from her slide, and score after an errant throw from the Bonnies' catcher.

Grad student Bekah Ansbro recorded a complete-game shutout victory on Sunday afternoon. Ansbro tallied 10 strikeouts and allowed just three hits in 7.0 innings, improving her overall record to 3-0.

GAME TWO
In the second contest, the Patriots got out to an early lead when Graham led off the bottom of the first with a triple to left center. Next Patriot to hit, sophomore Rachel Warrens, recorded a sacrifice fly to drive in Graham.

St. Bonaventure would answer with a run of their own in the top of the third.

In the fifth, Warrens would tally another RBI on a sac fly, scoring Verstynen, to give Mason a one-run lead. The Patriots would not look back after that, scoring two more runs in the sixth inning thanks to a two-run RBI single for senior Marissa Butts.

Senior Haellie Gordon threw 5.0 innings for Mason, earning six strikeouts and allowing just one hit and no earned runs. Gordon also improved her overall record to 3-0 on Sunday.

Freshman Carly Cooper came in relief and pitched the final two innings, earning the save.
