FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's soccer plays its first road match of the season against Virginia on Tuesday, with the opening kick scheduled for 1 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va.

The Patriots (0-1-0) dropped their season opener to James Madison, 3-0, on Saturday at George Mason Stadium. The Dukes scored in the final minute of play in the first half to take the lead and added a pair of goals in the second half.

The Patriots are facing Virginia for the first time since the 2015 season, when the then-No.5 Cavaliers scored two goals in the first half and held on for a 2-1 victory. Mason's lone goal was scored by Henning Dirks, who chipped the ball into the middle of the net from 10 yard out.

The Cavaliers outshot the Patriots 10-5 in the first half and 17-12 for the game. Mason had just one corner kick in the match.

SCOUTING VIRGINIA

Virginia finished the 2019 season with a 21-3-1 overall record, including a mark of 6-1-1 in ACC play. The Cavaliers were 15-1 at home, 3-0-1 on the road and 3-1 in games played at a neutral site.

Virginia defeated Syracuse (2-1), Wake Forest (1-0) and Clemson (3-1) to claim its 16th ACC Championship and first since the 2009 season.

The Cavaliers played eight regular-season games in the fall of 2020, with a 3-4-1 overall record and a mark of 2-3-1 in conference games.

Last Tuesday, the Cavaliers fell 1-0 to Virginia Tech in and exhibition match on Feb. 23 in Charlottesville, Va.

Junior forward Cabrel Happi Kamseu and sophomore forward Axel Gunnarsson are tied for the team lead with two goals each.
Graduate student goalkeeper Colin Shutler (2-2-1, 1.28 GAA) has played five games, while freshman Alex Rando (1-2-0, 0.96 GAA) has played in three games.
