Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |
FAIRFAX, Va. – The No. 12 George Mason men's volleyball team (5-1, 2-0) bested Charleston (W.Va.) (0-2, 0-2) in straight-sets (25-23, 27-25, 25-18) on Saturday night inside the Recreation and Athletic Complex (RAC).

The sweep gave Mason their second-straight conference win in as many games. The Patriots are now on a four-game winning streak heading into their first road trip of the season.

Despite the three-game sweep, Charleston (W.Va.) gave the Patriots their best shot. The Patriots' biggest lead in the first set was just two and the Green & Gold's biggest advantage in the second set was just three. Even through the Golden Eagles' relentless play, Mason broke away in the final set to secure the victory.

"I thought we did a better job of containing their servers tonight which allowed our offense to run at a higher clip," head coach Jay Hosack said. "That was the key difference tonight."

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Senior Hayden Wagner recorded a season-high 17 kills and a game-high three service aces for the Patriots.
  • Freshman Omar Hoyos led the Patriots with seven digs along with seven kills and a service ace.
  • Redshirt sophomore Zach Talamoa tallied 39 assists.
  • Senior Sam Greenslade added nine kills and five digs for the Green & Gold.
  • Mason outkilled Charleston (W.Va.) 45-33 in three sets.
  • Both team notched four service aces on the night.
  • The victory makes four-straight for Mason, the longest streak for the Patriots since they won five-straight in 2019 (two of those five wins came against Charleston (W.Va.)).
  • The win also marks 13 consecutive victories against the Golden Eagles as the Patriots remain unbeaten in the head-to-head series.

UP NEXT

Mason hits the road for the first time in 2021 to compete against Sacred Heart on Saturday (Feb. 13) and Sunday (Feb. 14). Both first serves are slated for 1 p.m. ET.

"We are on the road next week for the first time this year and we look forward to being away from home and playing in another gym," Hosack said after the win on Saturday night.
