KINGSTON, R.I. – The George Mason women's volleyball team won its third straight match, taking down Rhode Island in five sets on Saturday in Keaney Gymnasium.
The Patriots continue their best start in the Atlantic 10 in program history, boasting an unblemished record of 3-0 in conference play.
It was a total team effort as every available Patriot saw action in Saturday's match. Down several players due to injuries, the Patriots dug deep and found a way to complete the come-from-behind victory.
Mason was led by junior duo
Peyton Ehmke and
Katie Parmalee who combined for 28 kills and eight blocks. Ehmke finished with 15 kills and four blocks while Parmalee notched a career-high 13 kills and four stuffs.
On defense, four Patriots notched double-digit dig performances:
Erin Derick (19), Marlanna Bozcevich (18),
Yanira Lopez-Barahona (16) and
Stephanie Der (10).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Rhode Island took the first set, 25-18, after going a 13-1 scoring run in the middle of the frame.
- The Patriots fought off a late 3-0 run by the Rams to claim the second set in extra points, 26-24. Parmalee tabbed seven kills while Ehmke added six kills at a .857 clip in the frame.
- Rhode Island jumped out to an early 9-2 lead in the third set to cruise to the set-win, 25-13.
- After trailing by as many as six, Mason finished the fourth set on a 11-3 run to win the frame, 25-23. Mason recorded three service aces in the frame, two coming from sophomore Marley Willard.
- The Patriots took their first lead of the fifth set at 5-4. In a back-and-forth battle, Mason scored three straight points to seal the victory, 15-10.
- Freshmen Taylor Terry and Grace Kristofic saw an increased role in Saturday's match. Terry posted five kills, three digs and a block while Kristofic notched eight digs, four assists and two kills.
- Reigning A-10 Player of the Week Erin Derick dished out 37 assists and added 19 digs for the 12th double-double of her career.
- Sophomore Jewel Clark finished with four kills in three sets of action while Christina Walker recorded three blocks in four sets of play.
- Mason hit .159 in the match while Rhode Island finished with a clip of .178.
