FAIRFAX, Va. – Despite
Jordan Wakefield's career-high 27-point effort, the George Mason Patriots (6-4) fell to the Norfolk State Spartans (3-5), 66-59, on Monday night at EagleBank Arena.
Wakefield's field goals were all from beyond the arc, hitting a career-high six 3-point field goals (6-14) and finished with nine points from the foul line (9-10). The junior has scored in double-figures in all but two games this season.
Norfolk State was led by Mahoganie Williams with 18 points, shooting 57.1 percent from the field (8-14), including two 3-point baskets. The sophomore recorded a double-double adding 10 rebounds and six blocks to the stat sheet.
The teams went into the halftime break even at 28-28. The Spartans grabbed the lead 36-31 halfway through the third, but the Patriots went on a 6-0 run to take a 37-36 lead and then extended the lead to its largest of the game, 44-38, behind a Wakefield three-pointer. Mason hung on to a two-point advantage, 46-44, at the end of the third quarter.
The Patriots shot a season-low 27.4 percent from the field (17-62) and only 27.6 percent beyond the arc. The Spartans hit on 41.7 percent (25-60) of their shots from the field, and won the battle in the paint, 36-16.
George Mason has a 12-day break before they travel to Lewisburg, Pa., to take on Bucknell Saturday, Dec. 18 at 5 p.m.
