Dukes Defeat Patriots in Old CAA Rival Game

FAIRFAX, Va. - George Mason (6-6) could not prevail against the James Madison Dukes (4-7), 69-61, in afternoon action on Monday inside EagleBank Arena.

Senior Amaya Scott continued her success after an impressive 24-point effort Saturday against Bucknell, leading the Patriots with 19 points against James Madison. Scott registered seven rebounds in 39 minutes of play.

Junior Tamia Lawhorne added 13 points off the bench, shooting 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from field goal range and 42.8 percent (3-of-7) from three-point range. In addition, Junior Jordan Wakefield contributed ten points in the offensive effort for Mason, including 22 percent (2-of-6) from downtown. 

Junior Jazmyn Doster was pivotal in the paint for the Patriots, collecting ten total rebounds to go along with her 11 points. Doster registered her fifth career double-double in this afternoon's performance. This is Doster's third double-double this season.

James Madison was led by junior Kiki Jefferson, tallying 21 points in the Duke's offensive effort. Sophomore Claire Neff added 18 points, including shooting 55.6% (5-of-9) from behind the arc. 

The Patriots started out the contest with a strong defensive effort, leading 9-2 at the media timeout, holding the Dukes to 14 percent (1-of-8) from field goal range. A strong defensive effort by the Patriot's continued throughout the rest of the first period, holding the Dukes to a shot clock violation and nine points total. Mason owned the advantage on the glass in the first period, outrebounding the Dukes 11-9 while finishing out the quarter with an 11-9 edge over James Madison.

The Dukes struck first in the second period to lead 12-11 in a back and forth stanza between the teams. Junior Tamia Lawhorne's impressive 8-for-8 shooting off the floor gave the Patriot's the lead, 27-24, at the end of the half. Five different Patriot's accounted for Mason's 27 points at the half.  

James Madison started out strong to sprint past the Patriots in the third period, tying the contest at 32-32 with 7:06 to go. The Dukes continued their stride by going on a 7-0 run to grab the lead 39-35 at the media timeout. The Patriot's offensive effort was not enough as the Dukes landed a four-point cushion leading 45-41 going into the fourth period.   

The Patriots clawed their way back to start the fourth quarter, taking back the lead 48-47 with 7:50 left to play. James Madison retaliated, taking back the lead at 52-48. The Patriots then stormed back to tie the game at 54-54 courtesy of a 6-0 run before the Dukes went on a 8-0 run to grab a 62-54 lead with 1:44 left.

James Madison outscored Mason in fast break points, 14-2. The Dukes scored 26 points in the paint while the Patriots scored 24 points.  

Mason closes out its non-conference slate against Coppin State on Tuesday, Dec. 28 at 5 p.m. in EagleBank Arena.
