FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team tips off the Navy Classic on Saturday against Bowling Green. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. at Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Md
The Patriots round out the two-day tournament against host Navy at 3:15 p.m. on Sunday.
Brian McSweeney will call both games on the GoMason Digital Network, with pre-game coverage beginning at 3:05 p.m. In addition, Sunday's game against Navy will be broadcast nationally on ESPN+.
PATRIOT POINTS
* Mason suffered its second straight loss on Tuesday night, falling to American 69-61. The Patriots pulled within four with under eight minutes remaining (55-51) but would not get any closer for the remainder of the game.
* Mason shot 45.1 percent from the floor overall (23-51) but made just three three-pointers (.273). The Patriots committed 22 turnovers which turned into 24 points for American.
* American finished 51.1 percent from the field (24-47). Mason is 1-4 when its opponent shoots 40.0 percent or better from the field. They are 2-0 when its opponent shoots less than 40.0 percent from the floor.
* Senior
Amaya Scott poured in a career-high 25 points, finishing with a career-best 12 field goals on 17 attempts (.706). It marked the fifth 20-spot of her career, and first one as a Patriot. She has scored in double figures five times this season, and 45 times in her career.
* Sophomore
Taylor Jameson added a career-high 19 points, notching career bests in FGs (6) and FTs (5). She went 6-of-8 from the floor and a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe.
* Scott averaged 14.5 points, 8.5 rebound and 2.0 assists per game to earn a spot on the A-10's weekly honor roll for games played Nov. 15-21. She shot 43.5 percent from the floor overall (10-23) and 81.8 percent from the charity stripe (9-11).
* Scott is 136 points away from scoring 1,000 in her career.
* Mason ranks 18th in the nation and first in the conference in free throws made (81). The Patriots have made 108 trips to the charity stripe this season for a free throw percentage of .750 – good for 65th in the nation.
* In the A-10, Scott ranks ninth in scoring (15.5), 12th in rebounding (7.0) and seventh in field goal percentage (.506). She's fifth in the league in offensive boards per game (3.5).
* Jameson leads the Atlantic 10 in free throw percentage, going a perfect 15-of-15 from the charity stripe. She is just one of 13 Division I players that boasts a perfect free throw percentage (min. 2.5 made per game).
* Wakefield ranks 18th in the A-10 in scoring (12.5) and 13th in rebounding (5.7). She sits tied for third in three-pointers made (12) and 18th in 3-point field goal percentage (.364). She's fourth in the league in free throw percentage (.913), making 21-of-23 attempts.
* Junior
Tamia Lawhorne is shooting an efficient 46.3 percent from the field through six games – good for 15th in the A-10. She's recorded three double-digit scoring performances coming off the bench for the Patriots.
SERIES HISTORY VS. BOWLING GREEN
Mason and Bowling Green will be meeting for the first time in program history. Mason is 4-3 all-time against MAC opponents.
SCOUTING THE FALCONS
Bowling Green is off to a 1-2 start in 2021-22 after suffering back-to-back losses to #21/#25 Ohio State (94-63) and IUPUI (71-60). The Falcons picked up a win over East Tennessee State in their season opener, 90-58. Zoe Miller (13.3) and Morgan Sharps (13.3) are averaging double figures for the Falcons while Jocelyn Tate leads the team in rebounding (7.0).
Bowling Green posted a 14-4 MAC record in 2020-21 to win the regular season crown. BGSU advanced to the WNIT, and finished with an overall record of 21-8. The Falcons returned 10 letterwinners from that club, including all five starters.
SERIES HISTORY VS. NAVY
Mason and Navy will meet for the 16th time in program history with the Mids leading the all-time series, 8-7. Mason has won the last three matchups, including a 72-68 win on Nov. 29, 2020 in Fairfax. The Patriots are just 2-6 when facing the Mids in Annapolis.
SCOUTING THE MIDS
Navy moved to 2-3 to start the 2021-22 season after suffering a 76-52 loss to Fairfield on Tuesday night. The Mids have earned wins against William & Mary (64-55) and Vermont (55-51).
Jennifer Coleman, a Preseason All-Patriot League selection, was announced on Monday as the Patriot League's Player of the Week. She averaged a double-double in a 2-0 week for the Mids. She leads the team in scoring (21.1) and rebounding (10.6).
Navy was picked to finish sixth in the Patriot League Preseason Poll.
