WASHINGTON, D.C. – The George Mason women's basketball team fell to American on Tuesday night at Bender Arena in Washington, D.C.
The Patriots suffered a 69-61 loss to move to 3-3 on the young season.
Senior
Amaya Scott poured in a career-high 25 points, finishing with a career-best 12 field goals on 17 attempts (.706). It marked the fifth 20-spot of her career, and the first one as a Patriot. She has scored in double figures five times this season, and led the team in scoring in three games.
Sophomore
Taylor Jameson added a career-high 19 points, notching new career bests in FGs (6) and FTs (5). She went 6-of-8 from the floor and a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe.
In addition, freshman Paula Suarez contributed a season-best seven points and dished out three assists.
Mason shot 45.1 percent from the floor overall (23-51) but made just three three-pointers (.273). The Patriots committed 22 turnovers which turned into 24 points for the Eagles.
American finished 51.1 percent from the field (24-47) and 33.3 percent from deep (5-15). The Eagles were +10 in points in the paint (36-26).
Scott scored six early points for a 9-4 Mason advantage at the first quarter media timeout. AU notched back-to-back baskets to take its first lead of the game (12-11). Scott would score eight points in the opening frame as Mason trailed by one (14-13).
Suarez scored five straight points to cut the deficit to two (20-18). Scott then completed the and-one play to give Mason the lead (21-20). The Eagles used a pair of 7-0 scoring runs to hold a seven-point advantage at the break (34-27).
Scott accounted for 15 of Mason's 27 first-half points on 7-of-11 shooting (.636).
Mason came out of the gates strong in the second half, rattling off eight straight points. The sequence was highlight by back-to-back baskets by Scott (34-31). American responded with a 9-2 run to push its lead back to eight at the media timeout (43-35). Jameson scored seven points in the third quarter as Mason trailed by seven (53-46).
The Patriots pulled within four with under eight minutes remaining (55-51) but would not get any closer for the remainder of the game, falling 69-61.
Up next, Mason will participate in the Navy Thanksgiving Classic from Nov. 27-28 in Annapolis, Md. The Patriots will face Bowling Green on Saturday and Navy on Sunday. Both games will tip-off at 3:15 p.m.
