HARRISONBURG, Va. - The George Mason University men's basketball team (4-0) will tussle with James Madison for the 100th time in a historic Friday night affair in Harrisonburg.

Tip-off between the Patriots and Dukes is set for 7 p.m. Friday's game will be broadcast nationally on FloHoops, with regional coverage also available via NBC Sports Washington+. In addition, Bill Rohland will call the game on the GoMason Digital Network, with pre-game coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m.

PATRIOT POINTS
• The Patriots improved to 4-0 for the fourth time in program history with an impressive 71-66 win at #20/21 Maryland Wednesday. Mason led 67-66 with 57 seconds remaining, but stopped the Terrapins on their final two possessions to claim victory.

• The victory marked Mason's first ever over a ranked foe on the road. It's the program's first triumph over a top-25 team since an 87-77 victory over #18/20 Kansas State on Nov. 22, 2007 at the Old Spice Classic in Orlando.

• Graduate student D'Shawn Schwartz led Mason with a career-best 24 points at Maryland, including a personal-best six 3-pointers on 10 attempts. He grabbed nine rebounds in the win and is now averaging 19.7 points and shooting 53.8 percent (14-26) from 3 over the past three games.

• Junior Davonte Gaines added his first career double-double for Mason with 14 points and a personal-best 10 rebounds. He's averaging 14.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and shootiing 57.1 percent over the past two games.

• A-10 Co-Player of the Week Josh Oduro converted Mason's final two field goals vs. the Terps and finished with 12 points. He is second in the A-10 in field goal percentage (.660) and is third in scoring (17.5 ppg), alongside Schwartz.

• Graduate student DeVon Cooper added season bests in points (16) and assists (5) at Maryland. The consistent scorer has notched at least 12 points in all four games this season.

• Point guard Xavier Johnson is averaging 6.3 assists over the past three games. He ranks fourth in the A-10 in assists/game (5.0).

• Mason hit 12 3-pointers on 24 attempts (.500) against the Terrapins. Over the past three games, the Patriots are averaging 13.0 3pt FGM/game and shooting 47 percent (39-83) from long distance.

• The Patriots rank 32nd nationally in 3pt FG% (.426) and 34th in 2pt FG% (.589). Mason also is 13th nationally in  effective field goal percentage (.632), which accounts for the increased value of a 3-pointer. The Patriots lead the A-10 and are 31st in the nation in overall FG% (.513).

• Mason is in the midst of a five-game stretch away from EagleBank Arena which features two away contests and three neutral site affairs. The Patriots open the Crossover Classic Monday night against Washington in Sioux Falls, S.D.

HISTORY vs. JAMES MADISON
Mason and JMU, celebrating a historic Commonwealth rivalry, will meet for the 100th time on the hardwood Friday. JMU holds a slim 50-49 edge in the series, although Mason has won 23 of the past 25 matchups between the schools. James Madison is Mason's most common opponent over the program's 54-year history. Mason is 27-19 vs. JMU in Fairfax, 18-27 in Harrisonburg and 4-4 on neutral courts vs. the Dukes. The last time the teams met in Harrisonburg, Mason completed an improbable comeback to defeat the Dukes on Nov. 29, 2017 in Mason's final appearance at the JMU Convocation Center. The Patriots overcame a four-point deficit with seven seconds to play to take a 76-72 victory.

A LOOK AT THE DUKES (3-0, 0-0 CAA; KenPom 172)
James Madison was picked to finish fourth in the 2021-22 CAA preseason poll. The Dukes are 3-0 to begin the season, with wins over Carlow (135-40), Old Dominion (58-53) and at Eastern Kentucky (79-78). JMU leads the CAA in scoring offense (90.7 ppg), scoring defense (57.0 ppg), field goal percentage (.493) and opponent field goal percentage (.348). Junior Jalen Hodge leads the Dukes in scoring (13.0 ppg) and is shooting 53.8 percent from the floor. Grad student/Winthrop transfer Charles Falden averages 12.3 points, while Preseason All-CAA pick Vado Morse chips in 11.3 points and 4.0 assists per contest. Sophomore Julien Wooden rounds out the Dukes' double figure scorers with 10.3 points per contest.

HISTORY vs. IN-STATE, DIVISION I OPPONENTS
Friday's game marks the 406th all-time game for Mason against an in-state, Div. I foe. The Patriots are 189-216 (.467) vs. Commonwealth opponents over the past 54 seasons. Harkening back to its CAA history, Mason's most common in-state opponents are James Madison (49-50), William & Mary (40-28), Richmond (25-40), VCU (22-43) and Old Dominion (22-36). This season, in addition to the Dukes, Mason also will battle Old Dominion on Dec. 4 in Fairfax, as well as take part in its traditional home-and-home series with VCU and Richmond.

UP NEXT
