CHARLESTON, S.C. – The George Mason women's basketball team earned its third straight road win on Tuesday night against Charleston Southern at Buccaneer Fieldhouse in Charleston, S.C.
The Patriots downed the Bucs, 64-55, to improve to 3-1 on the young season. Mason has won its first three road games for the first time since 1987-88.
Four Patriots finished in double figures, behind a career-high 19 points from junior
Jordan Wakefield.
Wakefield recorded career highs in field goals made (7) and three-point field goals made (5). It marked her fourth straight game in double figures, and third time leading the team in scoring this season. She pulled down seven rebounds in the all-around performance.
Jazmyn Doster (11),
Taylor Jameson (10) and
Amaya Scott (10) also finished in double figures for the Patriots. Doster added a team-high eight rebounds while Jameson posted four assists and two steals. Scott was 4-of-7 from the field and pulled down five rebounds. It marked the 43rd double-digit scoring performance of her career.
Mason shot 39.3 percent from the floor (26-61) but made just five three-pointers
– all from Wakefield – on 12 attempts (.278). The Patriots were +12 on the glass (49-37) and +12 in second-chance points (19-7).
Wakefield hit back-to-back three-pointers to give Mason its first lead of the game (8-6). The Buccaneers reclaimed the lead after a pair of free throws with under two minutes remaining (14-13). Mason then rattled off seven straight points to end the quarter (20-14). Wakefield scored 11 points with three three-pointers in the first period.
Jameson scored Mason's first six points of the second quarter to extend the Patriots' lead to nine (26-17). Mason took its largest lead of the first half with 2:31 remaining after holding CSU scoreless for nearly five minutes (34-19). Doster beat the buzzer to give Mason a 14-point lead at the break (36-22).
CSU scored six straight points to open the third quarter (36-28), before Wakefield silenced the run with her fourth three-pointer.
Tamia Lawhorne completed the and-one play at the media timeout (46-33). Mason finished the quarter on a 16-3 run over 6:20 minutes to lead by 21 (57-36). Five different Patriots scored during the run.
Charleston Southern would not get any closer than nine for the remainder of the game as Mason earned its third straight road win, 64-55.
Mason continues its five-game road stretch with a Friday night matchup against William & Mary (Nov. 19). Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Kaplan Arena in Williamsburg, Va.
