Mason Begins Five-Game Road Stretch Tuesday at Charleston Southern

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team begins a five-game road stretch on Tuesday night against Charleston Southern. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Buccaneer Fieldhouse in Charleston, S.C.
 
Tuesday's game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN+. In addition, Brian McSweeney will call the game on the GoMason Digital Network, with pre-game coverage beginning at 5:50 p.m.
 
PATRIOT POINTS
* Mason (2-1) fell to 24th-ranked Virginia Tech, 81-52, in its home opener on Sunday inside EagleBank Arena. Virginia Tech made 13 three-pointers (.448), including nine in the first half (.529). The Hokies finished 47.8 percent from the floor overall (32-67) and were +18 on the glass (46-28).
 
* Junior Jordan Wakefield led the Patriots once again on offense with a team-high 16 points, one shy of her career high. She made a career-high four three-pointers and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
 
* Junior Tamia Lawhorne added 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting (.556) to go along with two steals and two rebounds. She's averaging 8.7 points per game coming off the bench for the Patriots.
 
* Mason made eight three-pointers against the Hokies (.364), having only made four total the previous two games.
 
* The Patriots posted a season-best nine steals against the Hokies. Wakefield, Lawhorne, J-Naya Ephraim and Taylor Jameson each recorded a pair of steals.
 
* Wakefield averaged 15.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game in a strong opening week for the Patriots, earning a spot on the A-10's weekly honor roll. She shot 42.9 percent from the floor (12-28) and 46.7 percent from deep (7-15). She also went a perfect 15-for-15 from the free throw line which currently leads the A-10.
 
* Senior Amaya Scott started her Patriot career with a pair of strong performances. She tabbed 16 points (8-10 FG) vs. FIU and nearly notched a double-double vs. Loyola (14p/9r). She's 190 points away from 1,000 in her career.
 
* Wakefield ranks 12th in the A-10 in scoring (15.0) and 11th in 3-point field goal percentage (.467).
 
* Scott ranks 19th in the A-10 in scoring (13.0) and 17th in rebounding (6.7).
 
* Redshirt sophomore Jayla Adams leads the team in assists (4.0) - good for seventh in the A-10. She tied her career high in assists (7) vs. FIU.
 
* Mason won back-to-back away games for the first time since the 2019-20 season when the Patriots defeated College of Charleston (Nov. 6) and Penn State (Nov. 14) on the road. Mason will look to win three straight road games for the first time since 2017-18 (Jan. 30-Feb. 15).
 
SERIES HISTORY
The two teams will be meeting for the first time in both programs' history. Mason is 32-20 all-time against Big South opponents.
 
SCOUTING THE BUCS
Charleston Southern has played one game this season, falling to Alabama 109-32 on Nov. 9 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Sha'Mya Leigh led the Bucs with nine points while Alyssia Faye added eight.

Charleston Southern enters a new era of women's basketball, with Clarisse Garcia beginning her first season as head coach. CSU returns four of its five starters from last season. Faye was the Bucs' leading scorer and rebounder last season, ranking inside the top 15 in the Big South in both scoring and rebounding at 11.9 points and 7.1 boards per game.

The Bucs posted an overall record of 6-17 and conference mark of 4-14 in 2020-21.

Mason continues its five-game road stretch with a Friday night matchup against William & Mary (Nov. 19). Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Kaplan Arena in Williamsburg, Va.
