Patriots Clash With Colonials Wednesday

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's soccer team plays its final road match of the season, facing George Washington on Wednesday, Oct. 20, with the opening kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. at GW Soccer Field in Washington, D.C.
 
Last time out, the Patriots (2-10-1, 0-5-0 A-10) fell to VCU in overtime, 1-0, on Saturday at George Mason Stadium.  The Rams netted the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 97th minute.
 
Mason sophomore goalkeeper Jackson Lee made a career-high nine saves in the match.
 
Sophomore midfielder Louis Lehr leads the team in goals (4), points (8), shots (26) and shots on goal (11). Freshman forward Balint Kocso is second on the club in goals (3), points (6), shots (20) and shots on goal (8).  The two have combined to score seven of the Patriots nine goals this season.   
 
Graduate student forward Miles Montgomery and freshman midfielder Linus Dahl are tied for the team lead in assists (3).  Montgomery is second on the club in points (5), and is third in goals (1), shots (11) and shots on goal (6).
 
Lee (2-10-1, 0-5-0 A-10, 1.76 GAA, 51 SV, 1176 MIN) has started all 13 matches for Mason, while sophomore goalkeeper William Schutze (0-0-0, 0.00 GAA, 13 MIN) has made one appearance.
 
Facing one of their most-common opponents, the Patriots are 27-15-4 in 46 all-time meetings against the Colonials.
 
The two teams met twice during the shortened 2021 spring season.  The Patriots and Colonials played to a 0-0 double-overtime draw on March 17, 2021 at George Mason Stadium.  In the last meeting, George Washington recorded a 1-0 victory on April 3, 2021 at GW Soccer Field.
 
ABOUT THE PATRIOTS
 
The Patriots have 12 returners and 19 newcomers on the roster under second-year head coach Elmar Bolowich.
 
Returning for the Patriots are senior defender Jakob Rylander, along with junior forward Kent Harrison and defender Jonathan Fawole.  Mason has nine sophomores on the roster with goalkeeper Jackson Lee, defender Noah McGrath, midfielders Daniel Chica, Evan Pedraza, Christopher Schray and Henry Wachsman, and forwards Nicolas Alt, Ishmail Kamara and Louis Lehr.
 
The newcomers include 14 freshmen.  Forwards Balint Kocso, Ryan Mahon and Darri Palsson, and midfielders Jose Alvarado, Luciano Covella, Linus Dahl and Michael Medina.
 
Rookie defenders Jaden Berman, Valentin Brandis, Marcel Cole, Ahmed Mohamed and Josh Morrobel will join the back line in front of freshmen goalkeepers Matthew Bauer and Jake Lee.  
 
The Patriots added graduate student defender Kennedy Davis and forward Miles Montgomery, in addition to junior midfielder Cameron Revels, sophomore goalkeeper William Schutze and sophomore midfielder Mike Oropeza.
 
Mason played two games in August, seven games in September, and close out the season with seven matches in October. 
 
The eight-game Atlantic 10 schedule includes road contests against Saint Joseph's (Sept. 17), Saint Louis (Sept. 25), Fordham (Oct. 9) and George Washington (Oct. 20).  The Patriots will host St. Bonaventure (Oct. 6), VCU (Oct. 16), Davidson (Oct. 23) and La Salle (Oct. 30) in A-10 play.
 
Admission is free for all Patriots' men's soccer home games played at George Mason Stadium.
 
SCOUTING GEORGE WASHINGTON
 
The Colonials have an overall record of 3-9-2, including a mark of 1-3-1 against Atlantic 10 Conference opponents.  George Washington is 2-4-0 at home and 1-5-2 on the road.
 
George Washington last played nine days ago, falling to Wake Forest, 3-0, on Oct. 12 at Spry Soccer Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.
 
The Demon Deacons outshot the Colonials, 20-5, including a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal.
 
Graduate student midfielder/forward Oscar Haynes-Brown leads the club in goals (4), points (9), shots (28) and shots on goal (11). 
 
Junior midfielder/forward Tom Cooklin paces the Colonials in assists (4).  He is tied for second on the team in goals (2), ranks second in points (8) and is third in shots (13) and shots on goal (5).
 
Sophomore defender Aaron Kronenberg is tied for second on the team in goals (2), and is third in points (4) and shots (10).  Junior forward Liam Emson is second on the team in shots (17) and shots on goal (9).
 
Junior goalkeeper Justin Grady (3-9-2, 1.30 GAA, 48 SV, 1243 MIN) has started all 14 games, while sophomore Duncan Wegner (0-0-0, 4.00, 0 SV, 45 MIN) has appeared in one match.
 
The Colonials rank fifth in the Atlantic 10 with a 1.39 team goals against average. 
 
CORNER KICK
 
George Mason and George Washington met for the first time in 1968, with the Colonials defeating the Patriots, 5-3.
 
Mason leads the all-time series against George Washington, 27-15-4. 
 
The Patriots have faced the Colonials 46 times, second-most of any opponent in program history, behind only William & Mary (47 games) and tied with American (46 games).
