FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason women's basketball team ran into a buzzsaw on Sunday afternoon in EagleBank Arena.
The Patriots (3-13, 0-9 A-10) were handed a 67-52 loss by hot shooting Richmond on Sue Collins National Girls & Women in Sports Day.
Richmond made nine three-pointers in the first half (.563) and finished with a season-high in 3-point field goals made (15).
Mason struggled offensively, shooting 31.1 percent from the floor (19-61) and just 28.0 percent from three-point range (7-25). The Patriots turned it over 15 times. Richmond scored 16 points off Mason's miscues.
Freshman
Teodora Popovic led Mason with a team-high 13 points of 4-of-8 shooting. She finished 3-of-4 from behind-the-arc and added three rebounds and two assists.
Sophomore
Jordan Wakefield scored 11 points as the only other Patriot to finish in double figures. She went 4-of-7 from the floor and made both of her three-point attempts.
Richmond was 6-of-7 from three-point range in the first quarter (.857), taking a 22-14 advantage heading into the second period. Five Patriots scored in the opening frame behind four points from
Marika Korpinen.
Mason pulled within three in the second quarter after back-to-back baskets by Popovic and Wakefield. But Richmond rattled off eight straight points to push its lead back to 14 with under three minutes remaining (35-21). At the break, Mason trailed by 10 (35-25).
Richmond made nine of its 15 three-pointers in the first half while Mason was just 3-of-14 from behind-the-arc (.214).
Richmond took its largest lead of the game with 2:11 to go in the third quarter (56-33). Mason would not get closer than 15 for the remainder of the game as Richmond earned its fourth straight victory (67-52).
