FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's volleyball team suffered a four-set loss to Coppin State on Saturday in the RAC.
"Today was a real battle for our team and it showed on the scoreboard," said head coach Aylene Ilkson. "A couple of points here or there and it could have been a different result. I was happy with those who came and stepped up in different roles today. But, we need still need to sharpen some things up and focus on our side of the net and how we can get better every set."
The Patriots move to 0-4 on the young season. Mason will face Atlantic 10 foe VCU at 1 p.m. on Monday at the Siegel Center in Richmond, Va.
Mason was led by a pair of juniors – Katie Parmalee and Peyton Ehmke. Parmalee posted career highs in kills (10) and service aces (3) while Ehmke notched 11 kills and a team-high five blocks.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Mason fell in four sets to Coppin State – 16-25, 24-26, 26-24, 24-26.
- The Patriots looked to pull off the comeback victory after winning the third set, 26-24; but after falling behind 7-0 in the fourth set, Mason was unable to complete the comeback.
- Mason registered a season-high 10 blocks.
- Coppin State held the edge in service aces, posting 13 compared to Mason's mark of five.
- The Patriots hit .170 in the match while the Eagles finished with a clip of .221.
- Junior setter Erin Derick dished out 41 assists and recorded nine digs and three blocks.
- Sophomore libero Stephanie Der finished with 17 digs on defense.
- Sophomore Marley Willard had a solid outing on defense, notching a career-high 12 digs in her first career start.
