FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team hosts Richmond on Sunday for Sue Collins National Girls & Women in Sports Day. Tip-off in Fairfax has been moved to a noon tip.
Sunday's game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN+, with commentary by
Steve Kolbe. In addition, Brian McSweeney will call the game on the GoMason Digital Network, with pre-game coverage beginning at 11:50 a.m.
PATRIOT POINTS
* Mason put forth an extraordinary effort on Friday in EBA but it wasn't quite enough to capture victory, as the Patriots fell to VCU, 64-56, in overtime. The Patriots moved to 0-8 in conference play and 3-12 overall.
* 46 of Mason's 56 points were scored by underclassmen –
Rachel Balzer (17),
Taylor Jameson (12),
Jordan Wakefield (8),
Jazmyn Doster (6) and
Vanessa Laumbach (3).
* Balzer finished with career highs in points (17), field goals made (6) and three-point field goals made (5). She also added three rebounds and two assists. It marked the second game she's led the team in scoring this season.
* Balzer has started the last three games and is averaging 12.3 points and 2.3 rebounds over that stretch. She has made 11 three-pointers (.344) and is shooting 36.1 percent from the field overall.
* Jameson scored a career-high 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting. She grabbed a career-high six rebounds and dished out three assists. She tied the game at 53-53 with six seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime.

Daijah Jefferson was the third Patriot to finish in double figures, finishing with 10 points and seven rebounds. Mason dropped to 3-2 when three-or-more players finish in double figures.
* Jefferson is averaging 8.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. She has scored in double figures in two straight games and eight total times in 2020-21.

Jazmyn Doster grabbed down a team-high nine rebounds vs. VCU. She is averaging 6.9 rebounds per game and 6.5 boards in A-10 games only. She's grabbed 24 offensive rebounds in league games – the fourth most in the A-10.
* Senior
Marika Korpinen will be back for the Patriots on Sunday after missing the last two games. In the A-10, she ranks 17th in scoring (11.2), 24th in rebounding (5.8) and 12th in FT percentage (.755).
* The Patriots are averaging 45.9 points in conference games and allowing 64.4 points.
* The Patriots are first in the conference in offensive rebounds per game (15.1) and third in total rebounds per game (41.1). The Patriots have grabbed 110 offensive boards in league play – good for second in the A-10.
* Mason ranks fourth in the Atlantic 10 in three-point field goal defense, holding opponents to a mark of 29.3 percent from behind-the-arc.

One of Mason's most frequent opponents, Richmond holds a 39-25 lead in the all-time series. The Spiders are on a two-game winning streak vs. Mason and recently defeated the Patriots 86-48 on Jan. 26, 2021 in Richmond. The two teams played in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) until Richmond left after the 2000-01 season.
SCOUTING RICHMOND
Richmond is 9-4 overall and 6-2 in the Atlantic 10. The Spiders have won three straight and six of their last seven heading into Sunday's matchup with the Patriots. Richmond sits tied for third in A-10 standings.
The Spiders are led by Kate Klimkiewicz who averages 13.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Elaina Chapman paces the squad with a team-high 7.6 rebounds per contest. Freshman Addie Budnik, a two-time A-10 Rookie of the Week selection, leads all freshmen in the NCAA with 41 blocks in 13 games.
The Spiders are averaging 64.8 points per game and allowing 61.2.
