FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team returns to EagleBank Arena on Friday to host VCU at 6 p.m.
Friday's game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN+, with commentary by
Steve Kolbe. In addition, Brian McSweeney will call the game on the GoMason Digital Network, with pre-game coverage beginning at 5:50 p.m.
PATRIOT POINTS
* The Patriots dropped to 0-7 in the Atlantic 10 after falling to Richmond on Tuesday night in the Robins Center (86-48). Mason also moved to 0-7 on the road this season.
* Richmond made 10 3-pointers (.345) and shot 47.9 percent from the field. Mason dropped to 1-6 when its opponent makes 7-or-more three-point field goals.
* Graduate student
Daijah Jefferson returned to the hardwood at Richmond, scoring a team-high 13 points and tying her career high in field goals made (5). It marked the fourth game she's led the team in scoring.
* The Patriots committed a season-high 26 turnovers against Richmond, resulting in 28 points for the Spiders. Mason is averaging 18.1 turnovers in A-10 play for a turnover margin of -7.86.
* Freshmen
Rachel Balzer and
Teodora Popovic have started the last two games for the Patriots. Balzer is averaging 10.0 points and shooting 33.3 percent from deep (6-18) over the two-game span while Popovic is adding 9.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists.
* Mason is 0-6 when one player finishes in double figures. Conversely, they are 3-1 when three or more players finish in double figures.
* Sophomore
Jazmyn Doster is averaging 6.8 rebounds per game and 6.1 boards in A-10 games. She's grabbed 21 offensive rebounds in league games – the third most in the A-10.
* Senior
Marika Korpinen has scored in double figures nine times in 2020-21 and 26 times in her career. In the A-10, Korpinen ranks 17th in scoring (11.2), 24th in rebounding (5.8) and 13th in FT percentage (.755).
* The Patriots are averaging 44.4 points per game in conference games and allowing 64.4 points.
* The Patriots are first in the conference in offensive rebounds per game (15.1) and third in total rebounds per game (41.0). The Patriots have grabbed 95 offensive boards in league play – good for second in the A-10.
* The Patriots have three players in the top-25 in the A-10 in rebounding: Jefferson (10th, 7.2), Doster (13th, 6.8) and Korpinen (24th, 5.8). Doster has tallied the fourth most rebounds in the A-10 with 95 boards and second most offensive rebounds with 40.

SERIES HISTORY
One of Mason's most frequent opponents, the teams have met 66 times, with VCU leading the series 34-32. VCU is on a four-game winning streak and claimed a 60-41 win over Mason earlier this season on Jan. 13, 2021. Jefferson scored a game-high 11 points and added three rebounds and two assists while Balzer went 3-for-7 from behind-the-arc for nine points.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
VCU (7-7, 5-2 A-10) improved to 5-2 in conference play after picking up a 67-60 win over George Washington on Wednesday afternoon in Richmond. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Rams.
VCU is led by Preseason All-Conference selections Tera Reed and Taya Robinson. Reed is averaging 14.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game while Robinson adds 13.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per contest. Freshman Sarah Te-Biasu averages 11.2 points and shoots 42.9 percent from the field.
VCU was predicted as Atlantic 10 Conference women's basketball champions in the league's 2020-21 preseason poll. The Rams finished second in the 2019-20 A-10 regular season with a 20-12 overall record and 13-3 mark in the A-10, and have finished as the runner-up in the last two A-10 Championships.
