Men's Volleyball Earns a Five-Set Victory to Begin 2021

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's volleyball team won their season-opening match against Ball State in five sets (25-19, 23-25, 25-23, 27-29, 17-15) on Friday inside the RAC.

In a game that was back-and-forth for a majority of match, the Green & Gold were able to string along some impressive scoring runs late to come away with a victory.

"Ahh, January volleyball," head coach Jay Hosack stated. "Three hundred and fifteen days since our last match and it looked like it today. It was not our prettiest volleyball but we found a way to win and that is what counts. The good thing? We get to do it all over again tomorrow."

A strong, come-from-behind third set victory shifted momentum toward the Patriot bench and gave Mason a one-set advantage. The Green & Gold ended the third set on a 12-2 scoring run.

The Patriots would end up winning the match in the fifth set by a score of 17-15.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Senior Sam Greenslade tallied a team best 17 kills, eight digs and tied a game-high two service aces.
Redshirt sophomore Zach Talamoa (26 assists) and redshirt senior Luis Velez (25 assists) tag-teamed as setters for the Patriots throughout the five set match.
On the defensive end, junior Trevor Kennan recorded a game-high 17 digs.
The Patriots ended the third set on a 12-2 scoring run, led by Greenslade who served throughout the majority of the run and tallied two service aces in the process.
Redshirt freshman Davis Kaderli and freshman Omar Hoyos both made their Mason debuts on Friday.
