FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team fell to Revolutionary Rival George Washington 67-47 on Sunday inside EagleBank Arena.
A strong third quarter effort from the Colonials proved to be the difference in the contest. GW outscored Mason 19-6 in the third period to cruise to victory. Mason drops to 3-9 overall and 0-5 in A-10 play. GW earned its first league win to improve to 4-7 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
Senior
Marika Korpinen registered her 26th double-digit scoring performance of her career with a team-high 13 points. She went 3-for-6 from behind-the-arc and added four rebounds and an assist. She was the lone Patriot in double figures.
The young Patriot squad received valuable minutes from their sophomore class.
Jordan Wakefield tied her career-high in rebounds (8) and scored seven points while
Jazmyn Doster recorded eight points (4-5 FG) and three rebounds.
Vita Stam provided a spark off the bench with four points on 2-of-3 shooting.
Freshman
Teodora Popovic made her Green & Gold debut in Sunday's contest, playing eight minutes and scoring the first points of her career in the fourth quarter.
GW got off to a blistering start in the first quarter, jumping out to a 17-4 advantage with 3:02 on the clock. Mason used a 7-0 spurt, behind five points from Wakefield, to end the quarter and cut the deficit to six (17-11). .
A three-pointer by Korpinen brought Mason within three to begin the second quarter (17-14). But, eight straight points by the Colonials extended their lead back to 11 (26-15). Mason committed four turnovers during the stretch and went without a field goal for over four minutes. As both teams exchanged runs to end the first half, Mason trailed by eight (33-25).
Korpinen was 4-of-6 in the first half for 11 points, going a perfect 3-of-3 from three-point range. Wakefield added five rebounds and five points.
GW extended its lead to 15 out of the break thanks to an 11-4 run (44-29). The Colonials continued to pour it on, outscoring the Patriots 19-6 in the third quarter (52-31).
GW maintained control of the game in the final quarter of play, rolling to a 67-47 victory.
