FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team heads to VCU for a weekday matchup against the Rams at 6 p.m. inside the Siegel Center.
Wednesday's game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN+. In addition, Brian McSweeney will call the game on the GoMason Digital Network, with pre-game coverage beginning at 5:50 p.m.
PATRIOT POINTS
* The Patriots will look to secure their first A-10 win as well as their first road win of the season on Wednesday against the Rams.
* Senior
Marika Korpinen has scored in double figures eight times in 2020-21 and 25 times in her career. She added a team-high 12 points in Mason's 59-37 loss to Dayton on Friday.
* Korpinen, whose previous career high was 20 points against Davidson a season ago, scored a career-high 21 points with a personal-best seven field goals vs. Davidson on Jan. 3.
* Graduate student
Daijah Jefferson has registered four double-digit rebounding performances this season and is averaging 8.8 points and 8.1 rebounds per game for the Patriots.
* Sophomore
Jordan Wakefield has scored in double figures in five games this season, including a 10-point outing vs. Dayton. She is second on the team in scoring in A-10 play (7.0).
* In the A-10, Korpinen ranks 15th in scoring (12.3), 24th in rebounding (5.8) and 12th in assists (2.9).
* Mason is outscoring its opponents 193-152 in the fourth quarter (+41) while shooting 38.2 percent from the floor (58-152). Mason has outscored eight of its 10 opponents in the fourth quarter this season. But, the Patriots were outscored 20-10 in the final period against Dayton which proved to be the deciding factor.
* In wins, the Patriots are shooting 36.9 percent from the floor (69-187) and 31.8 percent from behind-the-arc (21-66). Conversely, in losses, Mason is shooting 27.3 percent from the floor (109-399) and just 23.9 from 3-point range (34-142).
* Mason currently boasts a free throw percentage of .710 - good for sixth in the A-10. They rank second in the A-10 in FT made (137) and FT attempts (193). Junior
Devyn Wilson ranks 11th in the league in free throw percentage with a mark of .808 (21-26 FT). Korpinen is second in the A-10 in FT made (34), first in FT attempts (44) and 15th in free throw percentage (.773).
* The Patriots continue to be efficient on the boards, ranking second in the A-10 in offensive rebounds per game (14.9) and fourth in rebounds per game (40.2).
* The Patriots have three players in the top-25 in the A-10 in rebounding: Jefferson (6th, 8.1), Doster (15th, 6.6) and Korpinen (24th, 5.8). Jefferson has tallied the third-most rebounds in the A-10 with 81 boards.
* Korpinen is 21st in program history in three-point field goals made with 73.
* Six different Patriots have led the team in scoring this season - Korpinen (5), Jefferson (2), Wilson, Wakefield, Doster and Balzer. The Patriots have five players averaging at least 5.0 points per game.
* Mason opens conference play against four teams ranked in the top four of the A-10 Preseason Poll: Fordham (T-4th), Davidson (T-4th), Dayton (2nd) and VCU (1st). The four teams have a combined A-10 record of 13-4 so far.
SERIES HISTORY
One of Mason's most frequent opponents, the teams have met 65 times, with VCU leading the series 33-32. VCU is on a three-game winning streak vs. the Patriots and won both matchups in 2019-20.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
VCU (5-5, 3-0 A-10) is 3-0 to start Atlantic 10 play and picked up a pair of overtime wins against St. Bonaventure (69-67) and Duquesne (68-63) last weekend.
VCU returns three starters and is led by Preseason All-Conference selections Tera Reed and Taya Robinson. Reed is averaging 15.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game while Robinson adds 13.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per contest.
VCU was predicted as Atlantic 10 Conference women's basketball champions in the league's 2020-21 preseason poll. The Rams finished second in the 2019-20 A-10 regular season with a 20-12 overall record and 13-3 mark in the A-10, and have finished as the runner-up in the last two A-10 Championships.
