FAIRFAX, Va. - Jacy Bolton, Nicole Cardaño-Hillary and Marika Korpinen combined for 50 points as the George Mason women's basketball team downed UMass, 73-56, on Wednesday night inside EagleBank Arena.
Bolton and Cardaño-Hillary each scored a team-high 17 points while Korpinen added 16 in the contest. As a team, the Patriots shot 40.7 percent (24-58) from the field and made seven 3-pointers (.292). Mason's defense held UMass to just a 31.1 percent (19-61) mark from the floor.
The Patriots snap an eight-game losing streak to improve to 8-15 overall and 2-8 in Atlantic 10 play. Mason also hands the Minutewomen (16-7, 6-4 A-10) just their fourth conference loss of the season.
Korpinen scored nine points on 4-of-5 shooting to lead the Patriots in the first quarter. But, UMass scored the final five points of the period to lead 17-16.
A 7-0 spurt gave the Patriots a 33-25 lead with under four minutes remaining in the second quarter. Cardaño-Hillary chipped in five points during the stretch. Back-to-back baskets for freshman Jazmyn Doster pushed Mason in front, 42-34, at the break. The Patriots outscored the Minutewomen 26-17 in the second quarter of play.
The Patriots shot a blistering 54.8 percent (17-31) from the floor and made five 3-pointers in the first half. Korpinen (12) and Bolton (11) each had reached double figures in the opening half of play.
Mason continued to power past UMass in the third quarter, pushing their advantage to 13 after a 7-0 run (51-36). At the end of the period, the Patriots led by 11 (56-45). Junior Camarie Gatling provided a spark with five of her nine points in the stanza.
The Patriots took their largest lead of the game with 5:24 to go in the fourth quarter (64-47). The 9-0 spurt sealed the victory as Mason cruised to a 73-56 win on Sue Collins National Girls & Women in Sports Day.
The Patriots look to keep the momentum going as they host Saint Louis at 2 p.m. Sunday for their Pink Game.
