Mason Comes Up Short in Valiant Effort on Senior Day

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team put up a valiant effort on Senior Day, before eventually falling to La Salle 64-59 inside EagleBank Arena.

After trailing by as many as nine in the fourth quarter, the Patriots pulled within one with less than a minute remaining (60-59). The Patriots' final looks at the basket would fall short, as the Explorers escaped with a 64-59 victory.

Junior Marika Korpinen led the Patriots with 14 points (4-10 FG) and added three three-pointers in the contest (3-7). It marked Korpinen's ninth double-digit performance of the season.

All four seniors earned the start on Senior Day, providing solid contributions in the matchup. Senior Jacy Bolton finished with eight points and eight rebounds while Alexsis Grate scored eight points, including a mark of 4-of-5 from the stripe.

Senior Allie McCool scored Mason's first five points of the game, including her fourth career three-pointer. Senior Sarah Kaminski added three rebounds and two assists in the loss.

The Patriots shot just 29.0 percent (18-62) from the floor and made six 3-pointers (.261). La Salle finished with a 38.9 percent (21-54) mark from the floor and made 11-of-23 three-point attempts (.393).

Mason ended the first quarter on a 6-0 run to lead, 15-14. McCool and Korpinen each added five points in the opening frame. But, La Salle outscored Mason 19-11 in the second quarter to reclaim the lead at the break, 33-26.

Freshman Jordan Wakefield made a driving layup at the buzzer to cut Mason's deficit to five with one quarter remaining (47-42). After trailing by as many as nine in the fourth quarter, the Patriots pulled within one with less than a minute remaining (60-59). Junior Nicole Cardaño-Hillary made a three-pointer, followed by a pair of free throws by Bolton, for the five-point turnaround.

The Patriots' final looks at the basket would fall short, as the Explorers escaped with a 64-59 victory.

Mason will now turn its attention to the A-10 Women's Basketball Championships on Tuesday, March 3. More information on Tuesday's matchup will be released at the finalization of regular season play.
