FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason Patriots dropped their home opener, 6-2, to Iona College on Friday afternoon at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.

Mason (0-7) fell behind in the top of the second when Iona (1-7) scored the first run of the day against Patriots sophomore starter Mason Posey.

Gaels freshman first baseman Tyler Cannon led off with a double to right field.  Posey retired the next two batters, but a walk put runners on the corners.  Senior designated hitter Stephen Furman then reached on a fielding error, with Cannon racing in from third to make it a 1-0 game.

Iona added another two-out run in the third.  After a walk and a single put runners on the corners for the second straight inning, junior outfielder Vicente Mendoza drove in a run with a base hit to increase the Gaels lead to 2-0.

In the top of the fifth, the Gaels tacked on two runs on a RBI-single by sophomore outfielder Jake Field and a sacrifice fly by Mendoza to make the score 4-0.

The Patriots responded in the home half of the fifth.

Iona senior starter Stephen Hansen retired the first two batters of the inning before freshman Corey Leadenham and junior Jackson Barrett kept the inning going with back-to-back singles.  Graduate student Jack DeLongchamps then reached on a passed ball to load the bases.

Mason freshman outfielder Craig Miles, Jr. delivered with a single to right field to pick up his first two RBI of the season and cut the lead to 4-2.

The Gaels added two insurance runs in the top of the eighth for the 6-2 final to earn their first win of the season.

Posey (0-3) allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits with two strikeouts in 4.2 innings and took the loss.  Junior Austin Cabone surrendered two runs on three hits and struck out three in 2.1 innings, while sophomore Nick Zegna tossed two scoreless for the Patriots.

Hansen (1-1) allowed two unearned runs on six hits and struck out nine without a walk in 8.0 innings to earn his first win of the season.  Sophomore Drew Helmstetter got the Patriots in order in the ninth.

Miles went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Leadenham and Barrett each finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.  The middle of the order for the Patriots went a combined 0-for-12 in the game.

The Patriots and Gaels play the middle game of the series on Saturday, with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
