FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason University lacrosse team returns to action Wednesday afternoon with a road contest against Mt. St. Mary's.
First draw between the Patriots and the Mountaineers is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Mason last played on Feb. 19 against the Delaware Blue Hens. The Patriots were victorious, winning 11-8, to get their second straight win. The game was back and forth until the Patriots jumped ahead 7-3 at halftime.
The Green & Gold then kept up the pressure and resilience to build their lead to 11-4 throughout the second half to bring them to a 11-8 victory.
Senior goalkeeper
Melissa Semkiw was named the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week, marking her fourth time garnering the weekly accolade.
Semkiw put together an outstanding goalkeeping performance in a 11-8 win over Delaware, tallying a season-best 16 saves while allowing just eight goals in a full 60 minutes in the cage. In addition to her .667 save percentage, Semkiw also picked up a career-best eight ground balls and caused a personal-best four turnovers in the win. She stopped nine-of-13-point blank shots on the cage against the Blue Hens.
Junior
Deanna Balsama continued her stellar season, adding points (4g/2a) to her now 13-point (8g/5a) total for the season.
Senior
Morgan Rynn also had a great offensive game, scoring her first three points (3g) of the season. It marked Rynn's first career hat trick/
THE SERIES WITH MT. ST. MARY'S
Wednesday will mark the third all-time meeting between George Mason and Mt. St. Mary's in women's lacrosse. The Patriots hold an 2-0 edge in the all-time series. Mason won the last meeting 15-4 Mar. 30, 2016 in Fairfax. Former Patriots
Chachi Kelehan matched her career-high with five goals and Alexa McGovern notched a hat trick with three goals in the last contest.
A LOOK AT THE MOUNTAINEERS (3-0, 0-0 NEC)
Mt. St. Mary's was selected to finished second in the Northeast Conference preseason poll. The Mountaineers have started off their season 3-0, with their most recent win coming in an 9-8 overtime-thriller against Binghamton on Feb. 22. The Mountaineers had goalkeeper Jenna Oler named Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Week, and attacker Jordan Butler was named Player of the Week. Oler has been solid in the net, making 32 saves (55.2%) and posting 8.41 goals against average. Butler has continued her dominant performance by recording 13 points (8G/5A) in the first three games of 2020. The Mountaineers are coming off an outstanding 2019 campaign in which Mt. St. Mary's tallied a 16-3 mark and went a perfect 7-0 in NEC play.
