Patriots Drop First Game of Series at FIU

MIAMI, Fla. – The George Mason baseball team dropped the first game of its three-game series at Florida International, 5-2, on Friday at FIU Baseball Stadium in Miami, Fla.

Mason (0-3) senior starter James Beasley tuned in a solid outing, allowing two unearned runs over 5.0 innings of work.

With the game scoreless in the bottom of the third, FIU (5-0) senior infielder Derek Cartaya drove in a run with a ground out to put the Golden Panthers in front 1-0.

FIU sophomore Alec Sanchez knocked in a run in the fifth with a RBI single to make it a 2-0 game.

After the Patriots made a pitching change after the fifth inning, the Golden Panthers scored three runs on four hits against sophomore reliever Nate Young in the home half of the sixth to build a 5-0 advantage.

FIU junior pitcher Logan Allen was dominant in his second start of the season, tying his career-high for strikeouts with 13 over seven scoreless innings.

The Patriots scored twice in the ninth against senior reliever Gio Soto.  Graduate student Cooper Mrowka walked and scored on a throwing error and senior catcher Bailey Klein drove in a run with a single.

Beasley (0-2) allowed two unearned runs on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 5.0 innings.  Young surrendered three runs on four hits and struck out three over 3.0 innings.

Allen (2-0) tossed 7.0 innings of one-hit ball and struck out 13 to earn the win and junior Everett Hurst pitched a scoreless eighth for FIU.

The Patriots struck out 16 times and were held to three hits in the game.  Sophomore Pete Nielsen went 1-for-3 and scored a run, while Klein was 2-for-4 and drove in a run.

The Patriots are back in action for game two of the series against the Golden Panthers on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at FIU Stadium in Miami, Fla.
