Fairfax, Va.— George Mason (8-9, 3-5 MAC) and American (4-7, 3-5 EIWA) each had four-match win streaks, but the Eagles prevailed 18-14 in the Patriots last home match of the season.
The first two matches were nationally ranked showdowns. American drew first blood with a major decision, #24 Sal Profaci over #26
Alex Madrigal, 10-0. The Eagles Profaci jump out to a 9-0 lead in the first period with a takedown and a near fall.
Colston DiBlasi responded for the Patriots with a 4-1 decision over #7 Kizhan Clarke, handing the 149 pounder only his fourth loss on the season with an NCAA DI-leading 33 wins. DiBlasi improves to 26-8 this season and passes Adrian Austin (103) in all-time wins with 104.
Mason would take the next three matches and its biggest lead of the match, 13-4.
Mason sophomore
Kolby Ho avenged an early season tournament loss to Americans' Ethan Karsten with an 11-5 decision. Ho stopped a three-match slide and improved to 21-12. The Patriots Neil Schuster won his third straight with a 7-4 decision against Tim Fitzpatrick.
At 174 pounds, the Patriots Tony Lombardo earned a major decision against Anthony Wokasch, 15-1.
American cut into the Mason lead with a major decision by #23 Tanner Harvey over the Patriots'
Paul Pierce at 184.
The Patriots' bench was tagged with an unsportsmanlike call during the next match to close the lead to 12-9.
The Eagles won the next three matches to take a 18-12 lead.
In the final match of the night at 133, Mason's
Josh Jones jumped out to a 6-2 lead after the first period en route to a 9-3 decision against Josh Vega.
The Patriots were assessed another unsportsmanlike conduct point deduction after the match for the final 18-14 score.
