HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The George Mason softball team (1-8), split its double header on Saturday against Loyola (Chicago) and Houston Baptist at the Bearkat Softball Complex. The later game victory is the first of the season for the Patriots.
In the morning game, the Patriots did not fair well. The Patriots left three runners on base throughout the game and were not able to earn a hit in the contest.
Mason did record three walks in the contest, two coming from redshirt junior Meghan Graham. The Ramblers accumulated 12 runs in the seven innings, earning a 12-0 victory over Mason.
The matinee against Houston Baptist was different story for Mason.
The Patriots got out to an early one-run advantage when sophomore Taylor Dadig earned a RBI on a fielder's choice, scoring Graham, in the bottom of the first. The Mason bats provided insurance runs for junior pitcher Haellie Gordon in the third and fourth innings, tallying four more runs to extend their lead to five.
Gordon threw a complete game, allowing only one earned run on six hits and one walk in 83 pitches. The effort was enough to earn Gordon her first win of the season.
The offensive explosion was led by Dadig (2 RBIs) and redshirt junior Adriana Erickson (1 RBI). Graham earned her first multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored.
Mason's breakout inning came in the fourth, notching three hits leading to as many runs. Graham's single to left field drove in the initial run to start the inning, while Erickson hit a fly ball to right field with two runners in scoring position. The fly ball brought in both runners.
