FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team put up a valiant defensive effort against one of the top teams in the SEC on Saturday afternoon in Fairfax.
Mason fell to Ole Miss 64-34 inside EagleBank Arena to move to 2-3 overall with one non-conference game remaining.
Entering Saturday's contest, Ole Miss ranked 14th nationally in scoring offense, posting 89.6 points per game. The Patriots held the Rebels to a season-low 64 points, more than 25 points below their season average. It marked the first time Ole Miss scored less than 70 points in 2020-21.
Mason's defense also held Ole Miss to its fewest points in the first quarter (9) and first half (26). The Rebels shot a season-low 26.7 percent from the field in the first period (4-15 FG).
But, the Patriots were unable to find their offensive rhythm, scoring a season-low 34 points. Mason shot 20.8 percent from the floor (11-53) and made seven three-pointers (.241).
Sophomore
Jordan Wakefield led the Patriots with 11 points, knocking down a career-best three three-point field goals (.600).
Senior
Marika Korpinen finished with seven points while sophomore
Jazmyn Doster grabbed eight rebounds.
Mason held Ole Miss to a season-low nine points in the opening quarter on a season-low shooting percentage of .267 (4-15). Korpinen accounted for all of Mason's points in the first period for a score of 9-5.
A second-quarter 11-0 run by the Rebels put the game out of reach for the Patriots. At the half, Mason trailed 26-11. Nine of Mason's 11 points came from behind-the-arc (3-14).
For the sixth time this season, Mason outscored its opponent in the fourth quarter (20-17). The Patriots shot 50.0 percent (7-14) in the frame, making four three-pointers (.571). But, the offensive spark came too late as Ole Miss secured the win, 64-34.
Mason wraps up non-conference play on Monday against Delaware State. Tip-off is schedule for 7 p.m. inside EagleBank Arena.
