Mason Welcomes Navy in Home Opener Sunday

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University women's basketball team will host Navy in its home opener on Sunday inside EagleBank Arena. Tip-off in Fairfax is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Sunday's game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN+, with commentary by Steve Kolbe. In addition, Brian McSweeney will call the game on the GoMason Digital Network, with pre-game coverage beginning at 1:50 p.m.

PATRIOT POINTS
* Mason will face seven out-of-conference opponents in 2020-21 and an 18-game Atlantic 10 slate for the first time in league history.

* Mason returns nine letter winners and four players who started at least seven games in 2019-20.

* Graduate transfer Daijah Jefferson scored a career-high 17 points in Mason's loss to Pitt on Wednesday, 72-57. She played a career-high 32 minutes and added a personal-best five free throws (5-8).

* Senior Marika Korpinen added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds in the season opener. It marked the 18th double-digit scoring performance of her career.

* Mason put together a 29-for-39 effort from the free throw line vs. Pitt, including a mark of 14-15 in the fourth quarter. It marked the most made free throws by the Patriots since Dec. 7, 2015 (29-38 vs. Delaware) and the most free throw attempts since Dec. 6, 2014 (30-39 vs. Saint Francis).

* 47.3 percent of Mason's scoring against Pitt came from duo Jefferson and Korpinen. They accounted for 31 of Mason's 60 shot attempts.

* Mason's roster features eight underclassmen, four sophomores and four freshmen. Of the eight, six played more than 10 minutes against Pitt, with sophomore Jordan Wakefield logging 25 minutes.

* Junior Devyn Wilson provided a career-high 26 minutes of action against Pitt, making a career-high five free throws (5-6).

* Lawhorne went 7-of-8 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter vs. Pitt, tying her career high in FT made.

* 13 different Patriots started at least one game a season ago. Wednesday's lineup featured Taylor Jameson, Daijah Jefferson, Tamia Lawhorne, Marika Korpinen and Jazmyn Doster.

* Both Camarie Gatling and Daijah Jefferson have hometown connections to two Navy women's basketball student-athletes. Gatling played four years of high school and AAU basketball with Navy guard Jennifer Coleman while Jefferson and Navy guard Imani Edmonds are natives of Hopewell, Va., and played middle school and high school basketball together.

* Mason is 5-2 in home openers under the helm of Coach Milleson. Since 2013-14, Mason is 60-42 inside EagleBank Arena. Overall, Mason boast a 228-174 record (.567) at home.

* Mason is 54-37 all-time against Patriot League opponents. The Patriots were 2-1 vs. Patriot League teams in 2019-20.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Mason and Navy will meet for the 15th time in program history with the Mids leading the all-time series, 8-6. Mason has won the last two matchups and boasts a 4-2 record against the Mids when on its home court.

SCOUTING NAVY
Navy will open its 2020-21 campaign on Sunday against Mason. The Mids finished last season with a 7-23 overall record and 2-16 mark in Patriot League play.

Junior Jennifer Coleman returns as the team's leading scorer (9.7) and shot 38.1 percent from behind-the-arc in 2019-20. Captain Sophie Gatzounas is also back for the Mids after averaging 7.7 ppg and 5.2 rpg while shooting 45.5 percent from the field last season.

LAST TIME OUT
Mason tipped off the 2020-21 season on Wednesday against Pitt. The Patriots fell to the Panthers 72-57 inside Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Graduate transfer Daijah Jefferson finished with a career-high 17 points and added five rebounds and an assist in her Mason debut.

Mason shot 20.0 percent for the game and committed 17 turnovers, while Pitt turned it over 21 times but shot 42.0 percent (29-69) from the floor and held a 38-14 advantage in points in the paint. The Patriots put together a 29-for-39 effort (.744) from the free throw line and limited the Panthers to just 12 trips to the charity stripe (.667).

UP NEXT
Mason remains at home for a midweek matchup against Longwood on Tuesday (Dec. 1). Tip-off in Fairfax is scheduled for 6 p.m.

TICKETING INFORMATION/SAFETY PROTOCOLS
The capacity at EagleBank Arena for the upcoming Patriots' basketball games is currently set at 250 spectators following the current COVID-19 safety guidance from the Commonwealth of Virginia. In the event that the State issues new guidance in the future, Mason Athletics will adjust accordingly.

A limited number of tickets will be made available to George Mason students and guests of student-athletes. Approximately 150 seats will be reserved for season ticket holders. Tickets will be sold on a single-game basis. The opportunity to purchase tickets will be based on Patriot Club priority points.

Face coverings that meet CDC guidelines will be required at all times in EagleBank Arena. The limited number of fans, including students, allow for proper social distance markers throughout the arena, assign seating in pods, and delegated entrances to minimize traffic upon entry.

Ticketing for the basketball games will be strictly digital. The transition exclusively to mobile ticketing adds convenience for season ticket holders, while also allowing for contact-less entry to EagleBank Arena.
