Fairfax, Va. (Jan. 10, 2020) — The Patriots will celebrate the Sue Collins National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) by honoring basketball alum Keri Chaconas ('96) and Mason student-athlete Bailey Williams at the women's basketball game against Massachusetts on Wednesday, February 5 at EagleBank Arena.

Collins, former George Mason Senior Woman Administrator, worked at Mason for 34 years, retiring in 2015, pioneered many initiatives and programs at George Mason and at the NCAA level, especially in academic and eligibility policy.

The NGWSD celebration begins with a pre-game dessert and coffee reception in the Gold Room beginning at 6 p.m. A program with several guest speakers begins at 6:15 p.m. The basketball game tips at 7:00 p.m.

Mason will celebrate a record that hasn't been broken in 25 years. Chaconas scored 51 points against East Carolina almost 25 years ago to the day, February 17, 1995.

A 1996 graduate of George Mason, Chaconas is the all-time leading scorer with 1,747 points. Playing in the Colonial Athletic Association, she earned First Team All-CAA honors twice, named Second Team All-CAA as a sophomore and was named to the All-Rookie Team. She led the Patriots to 21 wins during the 1993-94 season, finishing as runner-up to powerhouse Old Dominion in the CAA Championship.

The 5-9 guard ranks first in 3-point field goals made with 218 and free throw percentage (.815), and fourth in all-time assist (439). A native of Annandale, Va., Chaconas played for the WNBA Washington Mystics before finishing her professional career overseas.

Williams is the recipient of the 2019 Sue Collins Leadership Award for Women in Sport presented annually to the student-athlete who best exemplifies the leadership qualities set by the former senior associate athletic director.

The senior volleyball player Williams served as an active member of SAAC for two years, quickly rising to a leadership position as vice president. In her role, she has proved instrumental in student-athlete engagement and activity at Mason. For her numerous efforts and accomplishments, Williams was selected and attended the Winning Edge Leadership Academy.
