FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason University men's basketball team plays the second of two 2020 contests vs. St. Bonaventure on Saturday in Olean, N.Y.
Tip-off between the Patriots and Bonnies is set for 4 p.m. inside the Reilly Center. Saturday's game will be televised regionally on Stadium and locally on MASN, featuring commentary from Matt Martucci and Dr. John Gianinni. In addition, Bill Rohland will call the game on the GoMason Digital Network, with streaming coverage set to begin at 3:45 p.m.
PATRIOT POINTS
• The Patriots are coming off a 78-64 setback to Rhode Island Tuesday in EagleBank Arena. Mason had difficulty getting shots to fall against URI's top-35 defense, while making 2-of-19 attempts (.105) from 3-point range and putting together a 10-for-22 effort (.455) from the free throw line.
• Redshirt-junior
AJ Wilson led Mason with a career-best 23 points (10-15 FG) to go along with nine rebounds. Wilson has scored at least 16 points in five of the past six games and is averaging 9.0 rebounds per contest during that stretch. He is averaging 14 points per game in league play.
• Two of Mason's premier scorers have struggled from the floor over the past two games.
Javon Greene is averaging 8.0 points and shooting 25.9 percent, while
Jordan Miller is shooting 18.2 percent and averaging 6.0 points.
• Mason limited URI to just four offensive rebounds after the Rams entered the game ranked in the top-50 nationally in the category (12.0/game). Mason is allowing just 5.0 offensive rebounds per game to opponents over the past five contests and has not given up 10+ since Jan. 11 at La Salle.
• Mason is 6-1 when scoring 70 or more points this season, but just 7-7 when scoring less than 70. After shooting 38 percent vs Rhode Island, the Patriots are 2-7 when not hitting at 40 percent or better from the field.
• Mason has dropped four of five games since
Justin Kier's injury.
• Wilson is fifth in the nation in blocks/game (3.4). He is fourth on Mason's all-time blocks list (144) and his 72 blocks in 2019-20 are second-most in single-season school history. He needs just six more blocks to overtake George Evans (1998-99) for the top spot.
• In conference play, Greene leads the A-10 with 2.9 steals/contest. The Patriots rank fifth in the A-10 in league games with 7.8 steals per game.
• Greene is sixth in the conference in scoring in A-10 games (17.0 ppg).
• Wilson averages a team-best 15.6 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.8 blocks in road games this season while shooting 45.3 percent from the floor.
HISTORY vs. ST. BONAVENTURE
Saturday's matchup marks the 13th all-time meeting between Mason and SBU. The Bonnies hold a 9-3 advantage in the series, including an 8-1 mark since Mason joined the A-10 in 2013-14. The Bonnies won the first matchup this season on Jan. 8 in Fairfax. Mason jumped out to a 19-4 lead in the game, but the Patriots could muster just 30 points in the final 34 minutes as SBU came back to claim the 61-49 triumph.
AJ Wilson and
Justin Kier each tallied 11 points to lead Mason, while
Javon Greene added nine points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
A LOOK AT THE BONNIES (13-8, 5-3 A-10; NET No. 130, KenPom No. 119)
The Bonnies were picked to finish fifth in the 2019-20 A-10 preseason poll. St. Bonaventure is led by sophomore Kyle Lofton, who paces the team in scoring with 13.9 points game and also leads the A-10 in assists/game, averaging 6.2 (19th nationally). Sophomore Dominick Welch also contributes 11.6 points/game and leads the team in rebounds/game with 6.2 per contest. Sophomore Osun Osunniyi returned to the Bonaventure lineup vs. Fordham after having missed a portion of the A-10 schedule due to injury. He leads the team with 43 blocks in just 14 games. The Bonnies won their first four A-10 games but had dropped three straight before defeating Fordham in overtime.

Mason has a midweek bye before returning to action next Sunday (Feb. 9) at Massachusetts. The 2:30 p.m. contest will be televised nationally on NBC Sports Network. Mason won the first matchup between the teams this season, 73-63.
